A bump, seeing if anyone has anything new to bring into the ol' Cafe...

I don't have anything at the moment, but I am working on a pic of Morgoth, which so far is coming along nicely.

Anyone ever take art classes in school?

Art classes at my school are a joke (and I go to a "Liberal Arts" school). One art teacher is lazy and doesn't actually teach, the other is biased to her own preferences and calls anything she doesn't like crap. A friend of mine who is a wonderful artist had her week ruined by the latter, even though her stuff is miles ahead of mine... but if Dr. Euler doesn't like your style, then you might as well not make art. Because, all she cares about is winning contests.

I suppose I could mention my recent DA submission, "Open Wide".

Currently I'm drawing up some concept art for a game I might create, titled simply, "Coat". It's a beat-em-up chivalry action game. Sound interesting?

I took an art class back in Middle School (don't laugh, some of those skills were useful, and I can still pull them off). One of the things we practiced that I liked most was 2 point perspective. Check it out, it's awesome.

I've been working on a pic of Forse as a morph ball rolling away from evil crab things, but work has been stalled due to
paper writing.

The best thing my art classes in high school taught me was how to draw what I saw, as opposed to drawing what I thought I knew.

It is a very important concept. You need to trust your eyes more than your brain when you create art. Because your head has a bad way of messing up anatomy and perspective for your drawings because it "thinks" it looks right, while your eyes know better.

A lot of problems in art can be traced back to the root problem of the artist only drawing what he thought he knew, as opposed to what was actually there.

My stuff is always really focused on people (I draw them better than landscapes, and facial expressions are more fun to do), so getting everything looking real is important to me.

Sigh. No one ever liked what I drew when I was little. I kept on drawing all these fantastical monsters and invertabrates and truly odd pieces, but no one liked them as opposed to, say, some pseudo-anime chick with big eyes and boobs. A little disheartening to the young me. Kinda wish I could still draw in the spirit of my youth, that of my pure imagination.

Middle school art classes were so much more helpful to me than high school. Of course, that's where I actually learned things like 1/2/3 point perspective, and then in high school I had to 'learn' them again. There's a mandatory beginning art class at our school for all incoming freshman, yes, even those with 3 years of the most advanced middle school art classes under their belt. Thoroughly boring. Moving up to sophomore classes, I didn't see much of a change, so I've switched over to music classes now. Much more satisfied.

Tolkien fans, anyone?

My sixth attempt at trying to scan this.

Damn, this was very hard to get onto the computer looking right. And it still didn't come out perfect.

I need a smaller sketchbook.

I am wondering. Should I make some sketches of Hotel Dusk art, or some Metroid?

I don't know which to pick. Right now, I'm leaning towards Hotel Dusk, mainly because there are so few bits of fanart out there...

So is that Hotel Dusk, or Metroid? :-P

I like that, some of the asymetrical points are very interesting.

OOo oooo me ME!! XD Well, sort of. I can do a paper crane, and I have a really awesome origami instructional booklet that I never use. :P It's called ORIGAMI - from Angelfish to Zen. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the subject.

One summer I worked at a grocery store as a cashier. It was horrendous and boring and soul killing. So to pass the time I made cranes out of receipt tape. :P

I can make a tiny ribbon star, too. Only did it once, though. I've seen some beautiful collections of them on dA.

Thanks. In a certain line of sketches, that eye is a motif of mine. I am always a fan of the big-evil-eye-of-something type of thing.

And what did you say?

EI that is AWESOME! :D The proportions looks so much better! <3 Your characters look like such interesting people. <3 It's kind of refreshing to see character art that doesn't seem directly influenced by anime, too. X3

I believe he was saying that that is Kyle Hyde from Hotel Dusk: Room 215. Ccertainly has the right hair and outfit. And facial expression, for that matter.
