Not necessarily. It is possible to flip a coin infinite times and never get heads. And that's with a 50/50 chance. The chance for life to form (I don't know the details, but it's probably around 0.00001% or something.) It would be possible for there to be no other life. Hell, it's incredibly lucky that even WE exist. Assuming there are parallel universes, the majority of them would have no life at all.

So no, the 'The Universe is Infinite' bears no water.

Of course, I'd still love to find extraterrestrial life, especially if it were intelligent and friendly.

OK, but if the universe is truly infinite there's "infinite room" for the coin to show its "You're not alone" side, and then you have some enormous chance of not living at the only living planet.

It's kind of ridiculous to argue about infinity. That's like saying, "as a fractal approaches infinity it becomes solid", or, "the ends of a parabola become straight when x is infinity". You know that's not possible, but it's infinity, anything's possible.

And it could teach us how to fly and use telekinetic powers and wield invincible power suits.

That was implied.

I wasn't saying "everything's possible", I was talking about probability.

Take a galaxy with a billion planets (and I'm sure most of them are MUCH larger than that). Using the numbers you provided, there would be 1,000,000,000*0.00001 planets with life. 10,000 planets. In just one small galaxy. Of course, considering that if you flip 10 coins, 5 won't always be the number of heads you'll get, even though the chances are of 50%, there could be more or less planets with life. It is a small number compared to a billion, but it also proves that a galaxy without life is nearly impossible.

What's really funny is that this topic started as an attempted troll, but-despite the OP's continual attempts to make it otherwise-it has actually yielded an intelligent, civilized discussion. Sorry, sunshine. Better luck next time.

If you flip 10 coins, you probably won't get 5 heads, but the bigger the number of trials (like flipping the coin a billion times), the closer you'll reach 50% of heads. Just sad we don't have a 50% chance of extraterrestrial life.

We are troll proof. That deserves a pat on the back.

In other news, it doesn't matter what the odds are of a planet being able to support life; this is infinity we're talking about. Odds become rather irrelevant if there is no limit to the number of times the experiment is repeated. Also, is the universe even infinite anyway? As far as I've heard, it's constantly expanding... which means it has bounds.

No. But I thought there was some talk of alternate universes, and the multiverse probably is.

Life is possible.
My intrest in this topic has been raised quite recently. Especially with the subject of a heathrow plane (in UK) almost hitting a UFO.
Since then i'm growing more and more intrested.

Always been curious about Area 51 and so forth..

X-files anyone? :P

Aliens taking over the world with a swarm of mutant killer bees raised in secret bee farms by clones made of children abducted over the years by UFOs? How about no.
