I work at a store that has a LOT of digital clocks with the standard, 7-segment display. Y'know the kind:

I began to think about it and thought, "Man, how long has that been around? Probably at least a hundred years. Why hasn't anyone designed anything better in all this time?"
So, doing some research and going to Wikipedia, I uncovered someone's LJ speaking about 5-segment displays.
He posts 2 designs others have come up with:

and then comes up with his own:

Now, they all have some shortcomings, being as they only have 5 segments to work with. In the first one, the 1 is hideous, almost completely unrecognizeable. The 7 is also atrocious. But I admit he did an overall decent job. The one below it is much better, however the shortcoming is in the 4. It's just... bad. Can hardly even tell.
So, what can I say? I was inspired. I made my own segmented design, however I used 6-segments instead of 5. I don't look at this as the "be all end all" of design answers. I just did it for fun, and am now displaying it here. Enjoy and feel free to discuss! Maybe you can design your own if you're interested.
