7-segment (and less) digital number displays

Postby Infinity's End » 12.29.10 1:52pm

Time to get REALLY nerdy.

I work at a store that has a LOT of digital clocks with the standard, 7-segment display. Y'know the kind: Image
I began to think about it and thought, "Man, how long has that been around? Probably at least a hundred years. Why hasn't anyone designed anything better in all this time?"

So, doing some research and going to Wikipedia, I uncovered someone's LJ speaking about 5-segment displays.

He posts 2 designs others have come up with:

and then comes up with his own:

Now, they all have some shortcomings, being as they only have 5 segments to work with. In the first one, the 1 is hideous, almost completely unrecognizeable. The 7 is also atrocious. But I admit he did an overall decent job. The one below it is much better, however the shortcoming is in the 4. It's just... bad. Can hardly even tell.

So, what can I say? I was inspired. I made my own segmented design, however I used 6-segments instead of 5. I don't look at this as the "be all end all" of design answers. I just did it for fun, and am now displaying it here. Enjoy and feel free to discuss! Maybe you can design your own if you're interested.

Nice!

IE, to make your 4 look better, remove the lower right segment.

I tried to make one but it ended up looking a lot like the green one :P

Wholy-- IE I think you must really have a great appreciation for 7-segment display on clocks now (if you didn't before). This is amazing. A testament to what the human mind can come up with when at work or in the job profession. :awesome:

I hope you have other ideas for this too I am truly fascinated by this idea now... you just blew my mind. While were at this idea, why not change just the digital clocks but the microwave digits and everything else that uses that method of digital numbers?

The ol' Romans beat you all centuries ago when they developed the two-segment number display system. ;)

Did a redesign today; less curvy and more pointy. ;)

I prefer your first one, except for the 4, which I think should be more like the second one.

I can't wait to see what you come up with LesserChozo!
IE, I agree with what TheBlackCat said. Change the 4.

I have refined it some more. This will be the final one I post; I'm happy with the way it looks for now.

Well here it is. I think the key here is curves, naturally. <3

Also, this is my first project using my new Bamboo Pen Tablet. It's taking some getting used to, but this thing is awesome.

Hey, LesserChozo, you didn't do too bad of a job at all! Although the 1 and the 7 are kind of difficult to understand, I still see what you were going for there, and it's a pretty decent solution for a 5-segment one. Very impressive, indeed!
