Brave

Postby RoyboyX » 06.14.11 8:11pm

Don't know if anyone's heard about this, but this is Pixar's newest film. It's called Brave. I quite frankly dislike the name. It used to be The Bear and the Bow, which was much better and more original than Brave...

Anyway, there's this spunky redhead Scot princess, Merida (the e is accented, why can't they use appropriate names? Like, if they're going to do another Arab princess, name her Bahar?) who decides to take up archery, has a fight with her mother and does something bad, which jeopardizes the kingdom. So, of course, she has to save its ass from whatever threat (something about an ancient old curse) that plagues it. There are some mentions of a fifteen foot bear (if true... shit.) and Julie Walters was attached to play a witch, but now it's a "Wise Woman". There's also supposed to be her parents, triplets and three knights supposed to serve as comic relief. I also heard unconfirmed rumors of a 21 year old prince Jeffrey and a John Ratzhenberger-voiced alligator named Rally. [lies]

I think Brave might be like Other M, as Pixar's first dud. Originally, it was to have the first Pixar female protagonist, possibly the first Pixar character in Disney Princess and also the first CGI one. They have laid off a lot, like the first female Pixar director, Brenda Chapman, even with false rumors of her departure from Pixar. She is now co-directing. Merida was supposed to be voiced by Miss. hot but diva Reese Witherspoon, and now it's Scot actress Kelly Mcdonald, which is more appropriate. Reese also voiced the platinum blonde from Monsters vs. Aliens, Dreamworks' first female-lead movie, so if she was still in Brave she'd be setting another record for Pixar. Anyway, I'm not saying it will be a dud, I hope it won't be, and that Cars 2 has a teaser trailer, and that maybe, just maybe, they move it to a late 2011 or early 2012 release. I mean, I predict at least one snowy scene in the movie, so why not a winter debut? Or debut it if the snow stays into April?

Another Pixar movie. Cool. Predictable, but cool. Overall I like their films, certainly much prefer them to Dreamworks fare, and regardless of whether or not I care for it I'm sure to be shanghaied into seeing it as my 10 year old brother is, predictably, a Pixar maniac, as are our parents, so I'll most certainly be accompanying the family to the theaters. Even with Pixar's less than stellar films, such as, say, Cars for instance, I've at least been able to admire the technical aspects, which is more or less what I watch their movies for now. If it happens to have a decent narrative, as most Pixar films do, and halfway decent characters, which is more hit & miss with them, than all the better. If not, then I get a free ride to an overcrowded, smelly theater, free overpriced food and the priceless experience of suffering through a hundred squealing children and their parents... Joy... God I hate the theater... And Cars 2 has more than a teaser trailer, it's due out on the 24th. Not a day I'm particularly looking forward to. Further still, summer has been traditionally the time for family film releases, and I don't think Pixar has ever released two films in a single year, so you'll have to wait until next summer at best to see it.

Please, do! z;)

And yeah, they were also supposed to be setting the record for first time that two Pixar movies were released in the same year, but Monster's Inc.'s prequel was pushed to 2013. And they shelved Newt. lol, I SO thought it was Newt from Aliens in CGI format! :'(

Wait, "first" dud??? I thought they started getting shitty when Cars came out. I then ended up hating Wall-E, and Up was just boring to me... I-) Then they completely jumped the shark with Cars 2, but it's quite obvious that movie was made just to make a profit.

This actually looks promising. Expect the game tie-ins, of course. I'm still pretty jaded when it comes to mainstream CG movies like this... last one I saw that I actually enjoyed was Rango, but only because that movie wasn't choked by the firm grasp of Disney.

Pixar could indeed benefit from some independence. One of the more unique aspects of their movies, versus the now average Disney fare, is the dual appeal they foster, able to genuinely intrigue younger and older audiences at the same time, typically with childish overtones and more subtle, mature undercurrents to their films, something the average Disney movie sorely lacks. However I often get the feeling that Pixar tries to stray into more mature territory, only to be slapped back by Disney's perpetual G/PG rating, too fearful of alienating even the slightest portion of their younger demographic, even in the name of artistic integrity and expansion, leaving Pixar to more or less flounder in a mire of mediocrity, as can be seen with their penchant for sequels to movies that never before demanded sequels in the first place. Than again, I could be completely mistaken and Pixar, like Disney, could simply be completely artistically bankrupt and only in it for the money now. Either or, Toy Story 3 was ok, Cars 2, like it's predecessor, will suck, and I'm just looking forward to something unique from Pixar again.

1.Other M wasn't a dud. (At least critically it wasn't...)
2.I doubt doubt this will be it's first dud. Pixar has made some excellent movies, and even the one I liked least (Ratatouille) wasn't "bad" per say. This sounds different, but I think it will end up being great.

Also....Why did they cancel Newt?! Why?! :'(

What the hell does that have anything to do with Pixar.

It doesn't, Kronoridley was addressing RoyboyX's first post. In any case, comparing Brave, which has yet to release, to anything is a little preemptive at present, the movie's a year away and historically speaking, Pixar's made good, profitable films, the likelihood of them failing now is minimal.

Obvious thing to ignore: The blatant potshot at Other M.
Correction to that original statement: Pixar has already made a "dud."
Additional information to above original statement: That dud was the long-ass, dull, boring-as-Hell, obvious-stunt-to-sell-toys movie Cars. Still haven't seen Ratatouille, but it looks about as fun of a movie as Cars. I liked (with varying degrees) every other Pixar movie, and from what I've read (haven't yet seen any trailers for it), this Brave looks to be somewhat fun if executed right. My hope would be that, since this is basically a Disney Princess movie with Pixar ingredients, they inject a little of that magic that made Tangled so damn enjoyable.
Supplemental information: The reason Newt was cancelled was supposedly, according to John Lasseter's implications, because of its similarities to the recently released Rio.

End Statement.

So, just tweak it to not be anything like Rio, or put it out anyway. Disney made The Wild, basically a carbon copy of Madagascar, and Dreamworks hasn't done nothin'. Also, I like MOM! Honest! As one user said (forget his name): I LOVED OTHER M SO FUCK YOU! :)

And yeah, Tangled was great! I just wished Flynn cut her hair a little lower, cause short brown hair like that and a pink dress, erm... they're also working on a Tangled animated short.

Meh, neither did I. My brother LOVED it though, and he considers his Lightning McQueen slippers to be stuffed animals that he plays with. Never seen Up, a friend of mine's older sister thought it was super sad. Seen everything else though.

To me, everything Pixar but Cars is absolute gold, and I'm super excited about Brave (Yeah, Bear and the Bow was a better name). Hopefully the comic relief isn't too annoying- usually they're good about balancing those things.

Ratatouille was cute and well done.

Maybe it will be like Paul, which was a HILARIOUS movie!

Ratatouille was making me hungry all the way. I was just disgusted in the instances where all the rats were seen grouped together, like at the end when they infest the kitchen.
