One doesn't quite seem all that efficient, setting logistics aside. I mean, considering the inane system of tubes and human hand-scanners the Pirates have, force fields just seem so inefficient. I...didn't think about those. Space Pirate base wasn't what I had in mind when I came up with that one. I was thinking max security in a GF complex, the max security part explaining the lack of hand scanners.

It's a clever idea though. I can do it if the sword has the right style and color to its appearance. We all know that Samus's power suit looks a bit complicated at first glance but upon a second look it is composed of fairly simple shapes. If you could apply that aesthetic and color it to match the suit, It looks pretty cool in my mind's eye.

I dunno, I just don't see Samus using melee weapons. But if she did, I would imagine it would be something like this:

I've always loved that picture, and it's certainly a good way for the weapon to implemented. It clearly doesn't even interfere with firing the gun, it protrudes from somewhere underneath it, not from the barrel.

The idea of a bayonet on Samus's gun is a neat one, to be sure. I wouldn't be offended if I saw that in a game.
Still, I'm of the opinion that it would be superfluous if Samus ever had to engage in fisticuffs while wearing her armor.

Always figured that Samus would be the sort of combatant that tends to avoid being in melee range. Despite how ungodly tough her suit is, she always seems to try and maintain some distance between herself and her foes so far. In the 2D games, the Screw Attack is about as close as she gets to killing things in close range, while in Prime it's indicated pretty strongly that if something gets up in her face and starts hacking away in melee, Samus is gonna lose. Or lose a few Energy Tanks.
Prior to Other M, the only time we've actually seen Samus attack in melee is during the intro for Hunters, where she Springballs a Pirate Trooper in the face (Freakin' sweet moment, mind you). And that was more a desperation attack than anything. Note that she doesn't even attempt to use her arm cannon while the Trooper is swinging at her; she knows it's ineffective in close quarters, and doesn't really have anything else she can use.
Hmm. I wanted to work the part in the Other M trailer where Samus tackles a Chameleon down to the ground and fires her arm cannon into its open mouth into this post because it's just fuckin' awesome. But I can't.

I would assume that a melee weapon would make up for it's short range by being either much faster or more powerful than the beam weapon otherwise what's the point of it?

Indeed, I would think that a dedicated close-range weapon would help make up for her short-range shortcomings and create a more well-rounded fighter.

Maybe if the charge beam feature made the surface of the gun work like a cattle prod...
