To me, I just want Samus to have something to get Pirates directly out of her face, even as simple as bashing them with her arm cannon.

It doesn't need to be flashy, just functional.
:metroid: = Ultimate Warrior
8) = Ultimate Warrior
Therefore, 8) = :metroid:

Now you know why they call it Metroid.

I think Samus using melee weapons is a bad Idea. Unless it's her grapple beam/lasso from MP3 or her (zero suit stun pistol whip thingy) Paralizer from SSB: Brawl.

I would not suggest Samus use melee weapons so much as an extremely short-range beam weapon. For example, a version of the plasma beam that does not have the magnetic stabilization in favor of energy, which means that it sprays plasma everywhere but not very far.

Kind of like a sawed off shotgun?

If there was melee weapons I would love it if there was an actual Narpas Sword.

Funny idea, I'd love it if they named a weapon that as a little reference. :D

I think melee weapons would only be possible if the game was open-minded. Luckily, this doesn't seem remotely out of the question.

I don't really think melee weapons would be much use, but making Samus bash away an enemy when you give the Wiimote a quick shake would be great (Prime Space Pirates bashed you if you got too close, didn't they?).

That would have been extremely useful during the Gandrayda battle in Corruption. I would've loved to headbutted her or bashed her brains in. Instead of going "Holy shit, bitch! Get off me!".

I feel melee would make Samus more dangerous. I still can't stand the way the suit is portrayed in the MPT as just a clumsy, power supply, tank with lasers. I agree that the suit is mostly defensive & augmentative, but take into account in previous metroids where she is an acrobatic powerhouse, bouncing off walls and performing multiple full-rotation flips and always lands on her feet. Combine those attributes with a nearly indestructible suit and you have something which would be quite deadly and proficient in melee. I don't see why Samus couldn't just crush a space pirates skull if she got a hold of one if the suit easily holds itself up on a ledge with one arm.

The grapple beam should have really been expanded and hopefully it will be in the new one. Like this... reel a space pirate in and blast it in the face point blank, now THAT would be AWESOME! Heh, get over here! I think the perfect melee weapon for samus would be a grapple beam mace. Perfect. I can see it now, "OMGosh Nintendo stole the whip from Castlevania!!"

It's not called metroidvania for nothing...

But in all seriousness, I think the Grapple Whip would be a perfect melee weapon for Samus. It's mid-range and defensive and also allows her to manipulate and position her foes. It's not a primary damage dealing weapon either so it still keeps the beams in the spotlight while allowing short range comboing.

I think you should have been able to grapple voltage any enemy if only to electrocute and stun them.

Who needs electricity when you can latch onto their hearts and pull them out of their chest cavities?

Spikey knees to the face/groin.

Tearing out their chest cavity and vitals with the grapple beam.

Stoving bitches' faces in with her bare hand and or cannon.

Energy blade formed from grapple beam, or energy bayonet.

Simple asskickery via Chozodian martial arts.

Immolating people at point-blank with super missiles.

Pinning enemies to the floor and then breaking their arms, legs and spine.

Epic grapple beam decapitation/general dismemberment.

Fist. Through. Spine.

Tearing said spine out instead with bare hand.

Juggling with missiles.

The list goes on. Project M doesn't need to make anything new: They've already got everything they need to turn Samus into a Facerapist.

I'm a huge fan of beam sabers, but I don't think it fits with Samus. Ranged fighting is good enough, considering how destructive her weaponry is. Like has been said before, Samus prefers to keep her distance and attack, and move in for the kill only if necessary. It's that reason I dislike Samus' moves in Smash Brothers so much, they're all made-up and fairly unfaithful to her signature style of combat.

However, if she had a free, varied set of acrobatic fighting moves, I wouldn't complain. Kicking things away, a quick overhead arm cannon smash, shoulder tackles while running, all of those are natural reactions to unwanted proximity and I would love to see such options. Someone who can jump and run as well as Samus would be comparable to a ninja in melee combat.

A saber or other such weapons totally change the combat in Metroid, and might be too large a difference between the rest of the series. Besides, beam weapons in Metroid have no startup or cooldown time, so it's just as practical to shoot something as it is to punch it or stab it.
