Too Anime For You?

Postby grampabird » 02.01.10 4:27am

I've been seeing a lot of people complaining that Other M is too anime. Take a look at these screens of past games

Now here are a few pics of Samus and Adam in Metroid: Other M.

From what I can tell. Samus has been more anime or just as anime in the past games (Metroid Prime 1 is the only exception) So why are so many people complaining? Metroid Other M looks a little anime but its at least the more realistic anime style. I could accept the bashing by fans if it was very cartoonish anime style like Dragon ball Z or Inuyasha but other M seems very far from that. Samus doesn't have huge unrealistic eyes or any other unrealistic anime features. Look at the pic of Adam, he doesn't look anime-ish at all. So if nothings really changed, then why the big fuss? To me Other Ms style seems like a step away from anime compared to previous titles. zO_o

Other M doesn't look especially anime to me. In fact, it doesn't look like anything to me. Because they haven't shown us jack shit.

Those linked images don't work because they're paths to files stored locally on your hard drive.

I just don't get what people mean anymore by 'anime cutscenes.' I mean, if it means, 'animation from Japan,' then there's not much we can do about it looking anime. There's really no other stylistic or characteristic means of defining 'anime.'

Dear angry fanboys of Metroid.

Metroid is made in Japan.

I don't think it's 'anime' styled.
I understand why some of the fans think think that though.

With Samus' short hair she appears to have bigger eyes. If anything-- the art style reminds me of some pretty Final Fantasy moment. I know that Final Fantasy has been known under the area of anime, but if you look at the most of the games such as FFVII and FFXIII, you'll realize the characters look more closely to real-life then anime styled.

Then again... it's hard to define 'anime' because of the different styles and options of what it is. xD

Yeah... I'd call the style more SquareSoft than Anime per se.

Could you please point out to me where people are "complaining"? I mean, are they on this board or elsewhere on the net? Perhaps I'm giving the members here too much credit, but I think they know better to make stupid assumptions and accusations over something that they know next to nothing about. Not to mention that they're all big fans of the series, so they're going to love this game, regardless.

There's no way this game is going to turn out like the stinking pile that was Hunters since Sakamoto is involved, so I think there's very little to be concerned about here.

Mainly the bitching and moaning of the "anime" style came from the group of fools who made that (agreeably trollish) petition against Other M. And this guy opposed it.

But for the most part, people whose opinions are worth a damn don't likely care about Other M's visual style being too "anime."

I agree with Sylux, in that it looks a bit like FFXII, even. Without the overly flamboyant cast.

I mean, it looks much more realistic than the 'classic' games, but you really can't say Super looks realistic, can you? I mean, all you see is one of Samus' eyes, and a pixelated version of her at the end.

Those images also reminded me how much I cringed at the Zero Suit in Prime 2.
I say the style has always been somewhat 'anime-inspired', though my favorites are (as I have oft-stated) the Fusion looks.

My cousin said he didn't like the it because it looked to much like Anime.

I agree with you guys that it isn't exactly anime. It is just different.

Here is the lay down for me. If the voice acting doesn't suck, if the cut scenes are good, and short, and not overused, then I think the game will be just fine. I mean after all, no Metroid game has really done this type of cutscene and stuff I mean, MP3 had some cutscenes I think they were pretty good but, pretty much my worries is the cut scenes and shit like that. If it is good, then no worries, cheers mate we have a good game. z:)

Eh, some of them. A lot of the dialogue in that game was just terrible.

Yea, the dialogue wasn't that good but all around the cut scenes were not unbearable

Heres one thread with some anime mud slinging, Ive seen 1 or 2 members on mdb complain but the majority of people complaining about it being too anime were from people I spoke with in person.
reading some of the posts in my link suggest that people are worried that the story will be generically anime. What makes a story anime? Alls I can think of is memory loss lol :D I think the real reason people are using the word anime to put down other m is because its a very vague word. I think microsoft fan boys would be the first ones to bad mouth a metroid game. Xbox is known for more western style ultra realistic graphics. So fans of the 360 might take a look at anything resembling anime and say it is shit because its not xbox.
ps >_< I am really getting sick of having to defend metroid from halo fans! I am also a halo fan but the common fan boys are really starting to ruin it for me. Why can't everyone just play good games regardless of what console they are on? (This was a rhetorical question please don't get off topic by trying to answer)
