Well, Nintendo seemed fit to put it out the door for some reason. There are only a few scenarios as to why they did, too.
A - Complete and Utter Ignorance of what their audience wants and expects B - They caught wind of what the story entailed, stopped production of it, and put it out to recoup costs, and it won't be canon going forward* C - They know what the next game will entail and that's why they went to Team Ninja and seemingly slummed it
* - If they do this, they need to come out with it.
We honestly don't know. If Nintendo was going to take Metroid out of Sakamoto's hands, they would have done so already since we know of no other Metroid game to be in development. From a level design standpoint, Metroid isn't that hard. It's not even duplicated properly. Imitated sure, but other developers just don't get it. Not even Retro, for as awesome as the Primes were, it wasn't fully Metroid level design.

Eh, you do know Sakamoto has been reponsible for about over half of the series? From a level design standpoint, Metroid isn't that hard.
No it's not, that's why it is hard to duplicate.

You know what I've learned, with series like Star Wars and Castlevania, including Metroid - thanks for Sakamoto-?
It's that if you are the head of a series,
Do.
Not.
Put ideas that are good for YOU. Ever. You have to put ideas that are good for the SERIES.
See what Star Wars has become since the last trilogy? I am not a fan from the franchise but you can see that a lot of shit has gone wrong. Same thing with the Castlevania series since Igarashi became the head of the series: he removed A LOT of the -good- old games from the timeline in order to fit HIS vision of the series, transforming the series into a mess of the timeline, with almost no belmonts and japanese stereotypes.
Now, I just hope Other M will only be the last one of its kind. Sakamoto has to learn this. If it doesn't, and stay lead writer, then we're fucked.

Metroid level design isn't that hard?
The fact that no game before or since Super has managed to get it just about spot on throughout the game it in terms of level design suggests otherwise.
Prime 1 almost had it though but that was a different genre, it flowed beautifully for the most part but there was some moments when the level (and game) design lost some steam.

I mean conceptually and what in essence a standard Metroid room does and looks like, and that's basically 1 path for every door in the room. 4 doors? 4 paths around the room. Execution is another thing entirely. When you talk about overall stretches of rooms, they loop in a circle to/from where you start. But when you get back to the original room you now have more paths open to you. And more often than not, but not always, a single path in a room can be done multiple ways. When you look at the Primes it's essentially walk, jump, fall or morph ball everywhere. Sure, you can do some sequence breaks with room geometry, but you're still essentially locked down to a single path in how you can traverse most of the time.

You know I have one question, and this still baffles me to this day....why isn't the Metroid Manga considered canon anymore?

Why isn't it? What exactly in "Other M" contradicts the manga?

Oh! I see! I agree. There is little to suggest the manga is uncanon. It actually reinforces the manga's relevance. (Ridley's past with Samus, Her PTSD, etc.) If anything, I think "Other M" would've been better received if the manga was released in America.

That's true, actually. In fact apparently Tokyopop had it at one point, but they cancelled the localization.

Ugh, I know. Pisses me off beyond all reason. Someone was selling both volumes in one pack on ebay, but I think the sale has ended.

They still show up on ebay, but usually go for about $50. What I wouldn't mind though is a copy of the Shonen Oh! comic, but that's going to be impossible to find these days. I think they used to sell for about $50 a pop, too, but that was years ago. In both cases, overpriced.

I've honestly gotten used to it, any worthwhile swag is always expensive (except t-shirts, but that's t-shirts).
