8.5-9/10 Somewhere in there.
It's a lot like Fusion but more linear and with better atmosphere and a mature art direction. The atmosphere of a Metroid game is one of the most important things to me and this feels like a Metroid game in that regard even if it doesn't in terms of exploration.
I like the story, but its told a bit unevenly. My biggest complaint is Samus' voice which sometimes work and other times doesn't.
The gameplay is generally great, but there are times when switching perspectives is particulary annoying. Sometimes it does make the action more intense at least.
I went in ans expected something different and that's really the key.
This was a good installment, I think we needed the change of pace, but it is not the direction I would like the series to continue in. Here's hoping to a more traditional Metroid.

+Core gameplay is fun, with some clever level design +Gameplay-wise, Samus has never been more badass +Fantastic animations +Controls are usually quite accurate and I've never died because of them messing up +Decent challenge, actually died 5 times(compared to the one accidental time in Prime 3) +Fun boss fights +I always know where I'm going. Some people might see linearity as a flaw, I see it as a virtue, damn near a necessity in some form.
-Craptastic story, with cutscenes that are amateurish and, quite frankly, embarrassing. -Where is the fucking music!? I think Metroid soundtracks are overrated in general, but they usually have a few memorable themes. The single good song here in Ridley's Theme, which we've all heard a million times now. -Where's Waldo scenes suck. -Everything about MB. The giant wad of exposition, the cliche plot, the final "battle" with her. -Combat does get repetitive after awhile -Enemy design is kinda dull, but that's par the course for Metroid really.
This mirrors my thoughts. Team Ninja did a spectacular job, and I would love it if they continued to contribute to the franchise. Gameplay-wise, this is my favorite Metroid. But clearly, Sakamoto needs to leave Metroid and stick to Warioware. He really, really took a big shit on all of us.

I seem to be one of the few people who had no problems with the pixel hunt, and somewhat enjoyed the story.

10 because this game put me in a good mood, Then I got to hard mode and pissed me off at that Elevator part in sector 2 with the space pirates attacking followed by that random reoccurring beetle bug guy flying in, and I kept getting raped, so I gave up for today.
10/10 for making me have a hard time.

8/10. Graphics and gameplay(except Where's Waldo and over-the-shoulder) were excellent. Presentation, story, and music sucked.

9/10 I enjoyed the fast-paced 3rd person shooting action. The beginning was sort of slow with how weak you start out, but generally makes you adapt to the combat system to survive, instead of abusing your powerful weapons to defeat any thing in your path. The voice acting was decent, and I enjoyed it to some degree. The story isn't as bad as people peg it to be. You usually don't get a story in Metroid games, save for the ending section of the game and a few parts earlier. The replay value is good, but the main storyline gameplay is short. Graphics were nice, except for some of the laziness with adding Alpha maps and some low-rez textures. CGI effects and cutscenes are amazing, being on par with some of the Xbox 360 and PS3 HD graphics. The story fills in a few holes for Fusion. I hope Team Roc- Team Ninja and Nintendo have another joint project for Metroid. They did well, despite some of the few problems with Other M.

7: It is alright and I had some fun playing it but there was just way too many things I either thought could have been done better or flat out hated. Most of them have been mentioned over and over so no need doing it again. Except, one major aspect and that's the whole exploration part of the game. . . or should I say lack there of?
Not only did this game tell you where to find all the hidden items but they were also very simple to obtain. No tricks, no morph ball mazes, no puzzles, and no diabolical shinespark contrivances. Just blast the the blinking blue spot and there you go. Yeah, Fusion was linear too but at least the hidden areas took up almost a quarter of the map. So, if you skipped out on getting all the items you would miss out on a forth of the game! In Other M, you miss out on almost nothing. Then to emphasize just how worthless this aspect of the game is they tossed in a mode that removes all the extra items in the game completely! No secrets? Does that sound like Metroid to you?

Samethard, Did not Super, Fusion and Zero Mission all reveal the locations of some - or even most - pick-ups on the in-game maps (they appeared as circles before being collected, and as dots after having been collected)? Other M merely followed that established model.
I would agree with you, however, that there were few, if any, hidden rooms. The whole map was laid out for you, instead of significant sections being revealed by exploration (as in the games I mentioned just above).

Although they didn't show where in the room that the item was hidden and those items were still very hard to find. Personally though, I'm not really offended by the blips that show items except for the annoying noise it makes.

It's true about the circles appearing on the map in the 2D games, however there are no hidden areas of the map in MOM. You can go back for an item cleanup in MOM and every single thing you need to pick up is highlighted on the map, whereas with other games the parts of the map containing the circles are hidden to begin with.

Well don't forget Metroid Prime 3, launching the satellites from Elysia. They show you the pickups you missed.

Yeah, those games do indicate hidden items in the rooms but quit a few of the rooms were located off the map anyway. Plus, they made a lot of the items require skill to get. Especially Fusion, which may have been as linear as this game but they made up for it by having some of the best hidden areas of the entire Metroid series. The item collecting in Other M on the other hand feels more like a chore than an actual challenge.
I levied the same complaint (and really only) toward the original Prime as well. Though, they did do better with it in the subsequent sequels.
I am a bit of a stickler for this, I know. One of the things I have always loved about Metroid games was once I completed them I could go back, bomb open some walls, and find a bunch of new areas and challenges. I would always be like "Wow, I can't believe all of this was back here for me to find!" and I am a little disappointed that I never got the same feeling in Other M.
