Really? How do you get down the stairs in the morning? Surely the whole lack of three-dimensions would make it pretty challenging?

Re: Do you like Samus from Metroid: Other M?It's like Mr. Game & Watch.
Or, better yet, you ever read Flatland? It's like Flatland. Point being, she ain't one-dimensional. She's a person. I've said before, now people know her better, some like her, some don't. Just like a real person. Shocker. (You all realize, of course, that if this were a truly awful story, and truly awful characters, we'd ALL be hating on it, instead of split down the middle? Give it four months, we'll even out.) Metroids are not pets.

Re: Do you like Samus from Metroid: Other M?
Touche.
Perhaps, but I still feel far too much time spent on monologues and cut-scenes that did nothing to further establish her character as opposed to build on the more trivial elements would have been far better spent on fleshing her out further. 'One-dimensional' was too far of an exageration admittedly, but I stand by my point.

Re: Do you like Samus from Metroid: Other M?While they were cheesy, I actually enjoyed the monologues. Even the ones where she's essentially just repeating what just happened. While I realize it's silly, unnecessary, and even bad writing to do that, at the same time, I like it just because I literally will do the exact same thing in real life. That's my actual thought process at times, albeit with less eloquence. Ironically, the aspect that probably breaks immersion the hardest for most people is the thing that increases it the most for me.

Re: Do you like Samus from Metroid: Other M?I mostly liked her in Other M, because I don't really expect her to be a stoic super woman, seeing all the shit she's been through. Here are my thoughts though:
Voice: Beautiful, I didn't mind it at all. I liked that she was really quite softly spoken, and had an almost delicate voice, it stopped her from being obnoxious like a lot of game characters end up. It also sounded fairly.... professional, I suppose, like she was recounting into a log or something, rather than whining or anything like that. The monologues were kinda trivial, but interesting. I suppose somethings were rather 'stating the obvious' though. Appearance: I think her face was lovely, and I really like the beauty spot xP And her new hair is pretty cool. The varia suit design is amazing too, but thats not really to do with this xD The Zero Suit I had a few problems with, mostly because the animation was kind of awkward. I think her hips were too big, and her legs too wide set, leading to difficulties with the walking animations and such. She also looked a little too 'barbie', lacking the muscle tone and wide shoulders that made her role as a bounty hunter and general badass more believable in the endings of games such as Super Metroid, Fusion and Zero Mission. Personality: Ahhh, the biggest issue. Personally, Samus hasn't disappointed me in Other M. She acted like I would expect her to, still being the badass that she is in all the other games, though showing her other side too. I feel like its a change in her personality in this game, leading to her developing what she becomes in Fusion. Its the first time she's worked with others in god knows how long, and its her old friend and old father figure, so the context is completely different to that of the other games. There are a few things that bugged me,, such as the Ridley scene. I'm not horrified by it, but I think it would have been more relevant in an earlier game. As Satch said in some thread, its the presentation of the concept which was most awkward and badly done. I'm sure I have more to say, but I can't go on ranting any longer xD |

Re: Do you like Samus from Metroid: Other M?Yes, I like her. Despite the quips and quivers of others, I like this new dimension of character that we see in Samus. I also find her voice cute.

Re: Do you like Samus?
No. That's...no. Continuity is an illusion as effective as the author behind it. The titles of threads such as "Do you like Samus from Metroid: Other M" draw attention (oftentimes intentionally) to the fact that a fictional character/setting/universe is not a sustained concept but one subject to deconstruction, inconsistency, and--unfortunately for a lot of people on this board--criticism. Who would expect Metroid: Other M to borrow concepts from Super Princess Peach?

Re: Do you like Samus from Metroid: Other M?Only about as far as I can throw her.
Which, incidentally, is only slightly less far than normal, thanks to the sudden T&A she got (did having a baby explode on her suit skyrocket her estrogen production or something)? |

Re: Do you like Samus from Metroid: Other M?It's a crapshoot. I personally like Samus even more now, now that I've given her more of a chance. She's not perfect, which I think is part of her appeal. What I didn't like about Other M was the plot. It's awwwwwwwright up until the last five minutes, where random shit happens and every previous plot point dies. Is the game about the deleter? Nope. Does Ridley become the main villain? Nope. Is the game nothing more than a baby daddy relationship between Adam and Samus? Nope. No, the entire plot
revolves around some android scientist woman who is really the reincarnation of Mother Brain and has big-time mommy issues. And there is nothing before this point in the game that even suggest that this is what the game's about. Fuck damn.
Samus is fine, she's allowed to have a bad day, and she still comes out of it a total badass. But goddamnit, guys! THE PLOT
Samus was portrayed more or less how I always imagined her: Totally badass, but soft-spoken and woefully socially pathetic, with pretty much no friends, and somewhat lacking in the "sound judgement" department. Some parts were way the fuck overexaggerated -although I'm probably alone when I say that the Ridley Scene was pretty damn good and perfectly justified- and Samus still comes across as a whiny bitch half of the time, but overall I really liked her. Anthony is still cooler though. |

Re: Do you like Samus from Metroid: Other M?No, she is just too damned nice. With Adam being her former CO, teacher, mentor, father figure, role model, and possible love interest stuffed into one sexy package, I can somewhat understand her reaction to him. Also, I can let slide her iteration with Anthony as well because he is just so awesome. What made me hate her though was
her little run in with that no good snarling commander at the end of the game who's name tag might as well have read "Prick." Seriously, wtf would this guy do if Samus decided to grab Madeline and walk out of there, file a complaint with the Chairman? Ooooo! Even worse, this asshole even had the balls to say something like "Too bad all your friends just died, eh" with a smirk on his face and what did Samus do in response? She just lowered her head in silence. . . Wait, WHAT?!? I guess it was just too much to ask that Samus be able to stick up for herself for once and tell at least this obvious douchebag to piss off! Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if this interpretation of Samus ended up sending that guy an apology card for Anthony's somewhat rude behavior. Fuck this Samus!
Re: Do you like Samus from Metroid: Other M?
Whoa, dude, I think you need to consider some things: Samus and Madeline were surrounded. They could've easily killed Madeline since they could've been shot at from all angles. Not only that, but she would've been forced to kill them all. Two, Samus really has no authority there. She's not with them anymore. To get in this guy's way would indicate that she's going against her most frequent employers. Three, as far as they could (say they could) tell, she really did have no business being there. Also, she needs to stand up for herself for once? You're basing this on just this one cutscene? I'm so damned tired of people allowing one fucking cutscene that they didn't like make them hate Samus, especially when there are reasonable explanations for her actions in them.
"Work is for people who can't play video games." - Jillian Wiebe, "The King of Kong"

Re: Do you like Samus from Metroid: Other M?
This. To the logical and possibly illogical maximum. Wholeheartedly. A character is almost always best fleshed out through her interactions and subsequent reactions toward other people, something Samus doesn't actually do in this game. Sure, she responds to a few lines, but non of her dialogue is character relevant, just situational. She never says "Hey Lyle, remembuh the bugs? What's your problem?" or anything, all she says is "oh no, this is happening. *switch to monologue* I remembuhed that one time that one thing happened". |
|
Re: Do you like Samus from Metroid: Other M?
"Remembuh" I lol'd. Maybe if Samus talked like that there would be some disappointment Metroid fan-wise. In that case, a game would need to be made around Anthony, where he too would act like Samus in that flashback/retrospective kinda way. He would start of every thought with, "I remembuh when..." Re: Do you like Samus from Metroid: Other M?
The same thing could have been said about them, as Anthony, thankfully, pointed out for Samus because she was to busy being a pussy to realize. Not to mentioned the whole thing was completely illegal to begin with and if she threaten to go public with it they would all be royally screwed. Besides, if they dared to start a fight with her she could have easily dispatched them without killing if she desired. At the very least though, she could have told that guy how much a prick he was. Also, I wasn't basing it all on that one scene, she was completely submissive and polite through the entire game. She might as well have handed out doilies to everyone she met. So many missed opportunities here. She had to do it only once and I would have been satisfied. She could have told Adam "hey dumbass, it is hot in here, I am turning on my varia" or Anthony "call me princess one more time and I'll shove that plasma gun up your ass!" Hell, it could have been the quarantine officer at the beginning for all I care, "polished my suit did ya? How about I polish your face with a wave beam!" Though, it really, really should have been that guy at the end. Overall, Samus just failed to show any indication that she wasn't a complete tool and to top it all off they made a freaken side character incredibly more awesome than her! No, I don't "remembuh" this dude. So, why give him all the cool guy moments and none to your main f'n character? Bah!
![]() |
