I agree with a lot of the foundational stuff he says, but I think he misses the problem with the game. It's not the authorization component, or that Samus got more explicit characterization as such -- that doesn't help, but the central issue remains the specific characterization she got. The problem isn't simply that she has doubts or issues or anything (which is fine, in itself), but rather the way in which those doubts and issues are dealt with and presented.

And yes, he misses the main problem of Other M, which is giving a previously very flat character this melodramatic, ham-fisted, cliche-ridden, oddly translated, passive protagonist bullcrap Sakamoto called a characterization.

LOL at the video. What a load of shit. And I was actually hoping to agree with this guy. Why does it seem that every internet critic who comments on the issue is completely WRONG? First Spoony (Hey Spoony, how many times did Samus "cringe in fear"? Once.), now this guy.

1. Metroid Prime was a bigger risk than Metroid Other M ever was. Why did Metroid Prime succeed? Because it was well-executed. I believe Other M was well executed, but certainly wasn't on Prime's level.

2. He equates Metroid Prime to "just another first-person shooter." That's like equating Super Metroid to "just another Mario-style platformer." Metroid Prime had about as much in common with Halo as it did with Ratchet and Clank.

And then, amusingly, he tries to excuse his views by going "OH BUT IT'S MY OPINION AND THEY'RE GENERIC AND STUFF" as if that means we're somehow bad people for ripping it apart for being about as true as Clinton during his trial.

3. He hasn't played Fusion ("Other M is when we learn Samus was once in the Federation Army", and he doesn't show any footage from Fusion). That right there shows that he's not exactly the veteran on Metroid affairs.

4. What Metroid game had you go through an active volcano for over 5 minutes before you got the suit? That's right, none of them, until Other M.

6. "Taking orders from him!" Because we should all take unnecessary and stupid orders that put our lives and the lives of others at risk.

7. Strawman part was funny, but sadly enough partially true about Japan. We have different cultural values. It's not something that can just be denied. It's like saying New Hampshire has the same feelings about taxes as the rest of the United States, and saying otherwise means you hate New Hampshire. It's often the reason some fictional characters are more popular than others.

I don't think that everyone who lives in Japan is a wife-beating misogynist. However, I also realize that *Gasp* they have different values on sexual relationships there than they do, say, here in Colorado.

8. We do not know any details about her backstory with Ridley from the games up until Other M. None. The only information on her past with Ridley comes from Super Smash Bros and the manga. That's a general incorrect statement that I often see, but I had to correct it here.

9. Because he hasn't played Prime and Fusion, he ignores all previous characterization from those games. Admittedly, there WASN'T any in Prime, but Fusion was a huge amount of information that's important to the discussion.

10. Really, the entire video just bashes a strawman of arguments; Samus was REPEATEDLY shown to be feminine. She wears a freaking midriff-bearing costume in Fusion's ending. Oh wait, what game didn't he play again?

11. LOL at calling Ripley cold and distant. Apparently, someone hasn't watched Alien/Aliens in a long time.

Oh yeah, those Metroid Prime games are creatively bankrupt and the causes of many of gaming industry's problems, dontcha know? Just like Bioshock 1 & 2, the Half-Life series, System Shock 2, Portal, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2, Timesplitters 2 & 3, etc. All mindless garbage.

I sat in stunned silence when that "jealous" argument came up. I just...I just couldn't believed he was serious with that.
