Because it happens right after Super Metroid.

This is the official order of the series:

Metroid/Zero Mission
Prime
Hunters
Echoes
Corruption
Return of Samus
Super
Other M
Fusion

Because Yoshio Sakamoto said so.

Plus, the beginning of the game is the end of Super Metroid.

Well, the Prime series comes straight after Metroid, which is the first game in the timeline. So, y'know. :P

At the end of Super Metroid, the baby Metroid gave its life for Samus and she had to escape planet Zebes before it blows up and it did. Before that, planet Zebes was still intact. So there's really no other place to put Other M in within the timeline.

In Metroid Prime when you go scan the planets in the Observatory in the Space Pirate outpost located in Phendrana Drifts where you get the Super Missile upgrade, planet Zebes is still there intact so there's no way Other M could have happened before Prime.
In times of crisis, weakness cannot survive. But be very careful how you define strength.
