Other M Gameplay on 3DS (not a port)

Postby Archaic » 12.22.10 8:48pm

Other M's gameplay style could be retrofitted quite nicely to the 3DS, or DS for that matter.

Left Trigger: toggle 1st person
Right Trigger: lock on
D-pad/Analog Stick: move
A: jump
B: shoot
Y: Morphball
X: Map

one problem is that the DS screen is rather small and low resolution and samus and the enemies could be difficult to see.

what are your thoughts? Would you like to see a portable metroid in other M style? Can you see any problems with this concept?

why would you want to remake/port this game? it JUST came out. id much rather have a metroid 2 remake or something so i can actually play that...

its not about remaking or porting other m, its about the viability of Other M gameplay on the DS. and whether or not we would like that gameplay on the DS.

you know, for sequels and new games. im sure im not the only one who enjoyed the game who would like to see more games with the same gameplay.

They'd basically have to remake the entire game from scratch in order for it to work.

We're just talking about the gameplay style and it's adaptability to DS... =/
Ie, the 2.5D style, first person switching, etc etc

Would the map then be on the second screen? I would like to see this kind of gameplay on the DS, as opposed to little chibi sprites at a 45% angle, which really annoys me....
Maybe the touch screen could be utilized for first person aiming/firing? And maybe have fusion style configuration where you can shoot beams in first person, then hold down a particular button to shoot missiles instead?
Who knows what they'll actually do, and if we'll even get another handheld Metroid. (fingers crossed for 3DS!)

Off the top of my head from a gameplay point of view, the following would have to change:

- Shrink the viewing area since the 3DS' top screen isn't true 16:9
- Adapt the game to the Analog pad in some form (preferred the entire game, but if it were Sakamoto, he'd probably only make it usable in first person, if at all)
- Move the HUD to the second screen, along with the map
- Pixel hunt objects would be in 3D (basically ruining their challenge)
- Sense Move would most likely have to be mapped to a button
- Concentration would probably be mapped to 2 buttons to prevent people from accidently using it
- Switching to first person would have to be mapped to a button

But honestly the whole first person mechanic would probably have to be removed entirely from the game.

What if one screen was first person, and one screen was third person? :O

Please no. HUD on the bottom would be fine. Removing first person would be even better because it'd mean missiles in third person and no pixel hunts.

But then it wouldn't be a HUD?

I think the HUD is fine on the main screen. I'd much rather see a map on the other one.

I'd honestly just like the option to turn it on/off. Other M has a lot of clutter on-screen.

Oh, and put the Battery Meter on the end of the Health Bar. That was really annoying.

Me wants. What I would really want is to work with both perspectives simultaneously with the same controller setup, no switching. Third person uses autoaim unless I use the first person aim, I can move exactly the same in first and third person, I can use missiles and other in first and third person. But that doesn't seem to be easy, with the 3ds' lack of buttons.

This may sound a bitt off-topic, but, if they ported Prime 1 to the 3DS, I would buy it in a heartbeat! <3

Bear in mind that most Metroid games (especially the Primes) are survival horror.

At least from the perspective of the Space Pirates.

well, if it goes 1st and 3rd on the screens, D-Pad could be for movement and analog for aiming...
