Re: Other M in extra creditsHaving alternate interpretations is fine...I have my own as well. But that's not even what I'm talking about. I'm talking about even just the bad storytelling...the purple prose, the clunky attempts at symbolism, the callbacks to events that were never actually explained anywhere in the game (or any of the previous ones), the trying to cover up lazy writing by hanging a lampshade on it... I mean, it's a bad sign when one of your own characters admits that a key plot point doesn't really make any sense. Everything related to the storytelling in Other M comes across like an amateur writer's first attempt at fanfic.

Re: Other M in extra creditsI know what line you're talking about and I could have it make sense.

Sounds cool, I like to hear from that soon. |

Re: Other M in extra creditsI read quite a bit of Mental and Sylux's article (not all of it - there are more things in life than reading about games), and I have to say I agree with parts of it. The thing is I don't think most of that is really all that important in the game. In the Hell Run sequence, for example, I didn't really mind Adam forgetting to tell me to turn the Varia Suit on. I do think it could've made for a better game if things like this were fixed, but it didn't stop me from enjoying the great game that is Metroid: Other M.
If I were watching a movie with that kind of thing, I would be annoyed. |

Yes, insult the geekdom instead of admitting you have no attention span. Smooth. I'd be really interested to see that fan comic, mental. "I'd better wait until Samus kills that Metroid before I shoot her in the back. After all, I don't know if my freeze gun will work on it."

1.) That's a borderline flame. Chill. 2.) mental no longer frequents these forums. (his qualms with Other M basically forced him to leave) |

"Learning From Other M" -Extra CreditsThe fallowing link is from Extra Credits a mini-series that Penny Arcade made.
This episode is about Metroid Other M failings, and how similar games might avoid them in the future. http://penny-arcade.com/patv/episode/le ... om-other-m --Sorry if this is old news, I only just found out about this. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Re: "Learning From Other M" -Extra Credits1st: Extra Credits originated on YouTube, than migrated to The Escapist, and after a falling out temporarily relocated back to YouTube, than finally settled in with Penny Arcade TV. It's not one of Gabe and Tycho's spinoffs.
2nd: Aye, it's old news, but still a good episode. People like to label it as unnecessary bashing, especially so late after the game's release, but herein Extra Credits is simply trying to make a point, one we here at the MDb may well be aware off but plenty of people not nearly as familiar with this particular game or franchise are likely oblivious to. I've actually grown more fond of M:OM over time, slightly, but am still willing to concede that Sakamoto and Team Ninja made a number of mistakes with the title. Like the series as a whole, Extra Credits is trying to use Other M as tool to educate other against the game's shortcomings, not the game itself, and it's certainly not the only example they've used. It's an approach more developers in the industry, and we gamers in the community, could afford to use more ofter: Examining the flaws in one game so as not to repeat them in another. The last metroid is in captivity. All's well in the galaxy.

There are far better games to use as an example. |

Re: "Learning From Other M" -Extra Credits
I don't believe there is. I can't think of a single game out there that took a female protagonist as universally beloved as Samus Aran and in one swift motion decimated her and broke her down in a way that absolutely shattered a fanbase (at least until Aya Brea got that same treatment in 3rd Birthday). If you can name me any other example, I'd be glad to hear it, but I think Other M is absolutely worth discussing, and how Samus, an icon of gaming of the highest caliber, was characterized is totally worth sharing with other developers, gamers, and fans to avoid a situation like that in the future. In fact, I'm working on a game myself that takes these same truths to heart with my female protagonist, and I'd even say the project began as a direct response to how Samus Aran was treated and characterized in the game. "Other M", deservedly or not, has become a shining example of what NOT to do with a popular franchise and character, and I think it's worth discussing why that is and why it didn't have to be that way, or should be that way inn the future. ![]() |
