07th Platoon

It's been more than a year now since Other: M has been released. We all know the controversy parts of the game created but the 07th platoon is never, ever really talked about. Aside from Lyle's dislike of bugs and their roles on the team I'm not sure anything is really known about them. After a year I'm sure there must be some ideas about their personalities and whatnot floating around somewhere. Has anybody seen anything? Is Misawa secretly super popular in some obscure corner of the internet? Has anybody tried extrapolating their peronal backstory and personalies based on the micrscopic amounts of data we have regarding them?

Aside from they kinda come across like a penal company. None of them really seem to be bothered when a squad-mate dies, their commander is incompetent, and they were pretty much sent on a suicide mission with no back-up. Hell, one of them is flat out a cold blooded murderer.

You've also got that guy who's scared of bugs. It kinda pisses me off that Samus' stuff is kept under lock and key, but that guy can mag-dump into a bug and nobody bats an eye. Who thought it was a good idea to bring him on a rescue mission?

Not really much you can say about them. At least they look cooler than the troopers in Prime 2 and 3. That's something I guess.

There's a gallery mode article here on Metroid Database that was translated by CapCom a couple months back, detailing an english version of the gallery mode present in the game. In it, there's quite a bit of information regarding the individual members of the 07th platoon. It's in the Metroid Other M tab, under "artwork", then "Art Gallery 2".

But yeah, they really put a lot of thought into some of this stuff. Like, someone actually bothered to make two different kinds of salutes, one for on-board starships (where there's limited space) and a normal salute. It's actually kind of surprising all the little details.

The only other thing you could look into is the origins of some of the names (some of the names are after film actors, and K.G. Misawa was named after a sumo wrestler who happened to like Metroid a lot).

I believe someone once said a while back his last name used to be Wong (which was published in an article here) but then Misawa the sumo wrestler died, and because he liked Metroid, they changed K.G.'s name.

That's kinda depressing actually. KG barely gets a single line, and then he gets dumped into lava. Not the best way to give tribute to a dead guy

No splashdown is what I'd call it. But again, it's probably one of those little details someone half-assed and somebody didn't notice...just like everything else.

Well, they did say they had to trim a few scenes and cut some stuff just to fit the whole damn thing onto the disc. Those splashes take up a lot of room and time. Why Nintendo? Why couldn't you have just left all the cut stuff intact and sprawled Other M onto two discs? Wait, are there any Wii games that encompass two discs? Huh...

Considering how bad the parts of the story are that we DO get to see, do you honestly think adding even MORE cutscenes to it would have improved the game?

This game has like a 20 minute long cutscene about a hand gesture, and you're telling me they left a bunch of stuff on the cutting room floor? Don't you want to see that content just out of morbid curiosity?

Not trying to defend any one person ( ) or entity here, but sometimes people focus on the wrong things when assembling a project. Take, for example, a 20-minute scene (failingly) detailing why the main character gives a thumbs-down during mission briefings, as opposed to a 5-minute scene in which we can see just why the main character trusts the dude that's acting like such a dick to her. Instead, we get a scene in which she learns that the dude has few issues with committing fratricide and doesn't fully trust in her abilities. Then again, with more room to play with, I would imagine that they could have expanded on the playing field and given us more areas (hint: Sector 0) to explore. Oh well.
