Metroid other M music

Postby Pirate parylizer » 07.17.11 11:43pm

There seem to be a lot of people bitching about metroid other m. And it's actually my third favorite metroid game (after prime 3 and super metroid.) But I can say without fear of contradiction that it outdoes all the other metroid games in its field of music. It has the best music of any other metroid game. I want to know what everyone else thinks.

Listening to the soundtrack, it feels like a different type of Metroid. No longer adapting from background themes. but just atmosphere alone. But the music is overkill, with excitement and pacing from a hollywood film. Although intentional, it makes a fan want the true music style to return.

Sadly I do not own a Wii, but I too have heard nothing but mixed reviews regarding the music in Other M.

The soundtrack feels like the original. Atmospheric and amelodic, punctuated by bits of melody. Main melody returns at the end of the game. Lots of people don't like it because it's got few hummable melodies. The original wasn't about melody either.

It's been awhile since I played, but I also wouldn't be surprised if there was fine-tuning done with the pacing of the music and the on-screen events. Timing plays a large part in Sakamoto's repertoire.

It's almost as if the soundtrack of Metroid 2 got the Hollywood treatment- with the whole symphonic orchestra and thundering drums...

The music is definitely good, and I like many of the tracks, but I suppose I'm spoiled after all the stuff that Kenji Yamamoto did for the series, and even the Fusion soundtrack, while not as memorable, had a lot of good tracks.

I wished for some more variety in the boss tracks, which were indistinguishable from one another, for the most part. In fact, most tracks were indistinguishable from one another, which kind of sucked, because even in Metroid 1, each area had a distinct tune that just fit.
Again I bring up Metroid 2 because the caverns all looked alike, and for the most part, sounded alike, which is similar to the situation on the Bottle Ship.
must be some sorta side effect of the hatchling or maybe she should stop going down on Miyamoto.

I feel that Other M is rather hit and miss with music. Some of it is VERY good and very "Metroid-esque" (ugh, that sounds like a fangirl statement), while others don't necessarily feel like they're from a Metroid game.

The biggest issue is I did like what I heard, but there's so LITTLE atmospheric music in the game, it's almost maddening. Prior games were full of atmospheric melodies and songs that punctuated the isolation, action, or beauty of the worlds you visited, from the championing choruses of Metroid II to the serene beauty of Phenandra Drifts to the dangerous wonder of Torvus Bog to Prime 3's Sky Temple to the chilling tune of Ridley's Lair to... you get the point. Other M didn't really have any songs that matched the atmospheric wonder of its predecessors, instead going for bombastic orchestral scores for important scenes akin to the Hollywood treatment it gave the game itself.

It's a personal preference, and I did like the music, but I prefer the type of music I can throw on and let my mind get taken to distant worlds of alien beauty and strange exotic imagery. I'll always crave more of that type of music.

I absolutely love ambient music! I like it more than any other kind of music. I used to be really big into black, melodic/doom metal/industrial dark noise. When I think back, I loved it because it was ambient or trying to capture something specific, but very subtle. I really like catchy beautiful melodies, I use them in my own music. But to me it is the idea that matters. I fucking loved the other m soundtrack! I really think there is a lot there if you allow yourself to be more open to it. It is minimal and subtle, and makes the points where melody is heard pop that much more. Even if they are never this minimal again, I am happy they gave it a try, it worked for me! :awesome:

I don't know why the music in Other M was so muted. I wish I could have turned it up and the effects down. I could almost never hear the music. Although I think the game at places made you feel hot, cold, or in a jungle of some place and I guess that kinda made up for the lack of in your face music. I dunno how to describe it really.

You also have to remember that Other M and Fusion aren't on alien planets, but are in simulated environments. It's not so much that it's supposed to be an alien world, but a world that humans inevitably control but ultimately fail at containing. Cooridors and the lack of Smooth Jazz probably helped in their downfall.

I like a lot of the music in the game, but I was very disappointed when they didn't give me my lower Norfair remix.

I liked the fact that it was orchestrated. The only thing I did think it lacked was (which many people already pointed out) that the environments did not have as memorable soundtracks as some of the other stuff in the game. But then again, the entire game did take place on a space ship. So it kind of makes sense. However if they do a sequel, I would like to see it take place on a planet or a solar system again.

I played the game in full surround, so now I'm wondering if that's what contributed to my love of the music. (I'm a big fan of movie OSTs too, so...)

I'd suggest haters download the track and listen to it on an mp3 player/their computer, that way you can get the full effect. The tracks really do have some great atmosphere- some are genuinely creepy. Sector 3 in particular makes me want to crawl under my bed. I remember wanting to get out of Sector 3 as quickly as possible. (The music sounds like tons of far off screaming voices.) My mom walked in once and wondered if the area I was in was supposed to be Hell.

I have a bunch of other faves, but I haven't listened to it in a while. :P At school it was my "work" music.

Because of the game's soundtrack, I'm always composing original soundtracks in my head that people seem to really like. The staff credits and the piano medley I liked the most.

I'm just bumping this to say that I wanted to give this soundtrack a real good listen one of these days this week, to really appreciate the music in its own merits (while of course, appreciating a game's music in its own environment is equally important, if not more so - context is everything), so I am glad the rip is available on the site.

I assume it's a full rip of the entirety of every track, yes?

Mainly I've been trying to teach myself a bit more about ambient, background music, and I suppose the high-quality MOM soundtrack is a good place to start (along with Fallout 1 and other games)!

As well, I've begun to really appreciate film scores more, and well, Other M is about as close to film as Metroid gets, in terms of story pacing and music, ha ha.

Same here. Yeah, it may be "Disney-esque", but man is it wonderful to listen too.

I think Metroid: Other M's soundtrack works, but it doesn't hold up very well outside of the game. To me, its very hit or miss in comparison to other Metroid soundtracks which were not only balanced melody and atmosphere better but I could listen to the themes outside of the game with no problem.

I will say this though: Other M's soundtrack is much better then Fusion's. Besides like two songs, I really did not like Fusion's soundtrack at all.
