What were some of the things that left you feeling weirded out, nervous, etc. when you were playing a Metroid game? Fusion was my first Metroid, so at a young age I didn't know what I was in for. I only knew Samus previously from the N64 Smash Bros. So I have a few things that I remember leaving me creeped/freaked out: 1.) The Pre Title Clip When I first saw this, I was thinking: "Cool! Samus is flying to a giant ship!" Then she suddenly decided to head for the asteroids. I was like "Wha!?" The humming music gets louder and louder, then *Boom* her ship explodes. Boy, was I in for a hardcore ride. 2.) Samus Unconcious I'll never forget how creepy this looked to me as a kid. It really left me feeling unsettled. 3.) SA-X reveal cutscene "Hey that looks like Samus's real su--AH!"

I found the fusion opening pretty creepy, how she was unconscious and the x was invading her nervous system or something. I think it was more the matter of fact way that she narrated everything that happened xD Also on the ship, when Adam was calculating my chance of surviving. None of it was actually scary but it definitely gave a creepy vibe.

Nightmare's silhouette rampaging around in Fusion was pretty freaky back in the day.
But the scariest thing to happen in any Metroid game for me happened this one time when I was playing Prime and hadn't saved for a criminally long time, and when I took an elevator to go back to the Chozo Ruins, the game froze.

Freakin' SA-X, man. The chase scenes. I used to panic during those. If it had actually been difficult to defeat at the end, it would have been one of the best video game villains ever.
I actually just remembered that since Fusion was my first Metroid game, I didn't know what a power bomb was the first time I played it. So I'm rolled up hiding in that little tunnel, and I get close to SA-X and it drops a bomb. I think, "Oh, it's just a bomb, no sweat." Then... "wwwwwwwWWWWWSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHH." I was not prepared for that on any level.

The Lower Brinstar and Lower Maridia areas of Super Metroid.
Plumbing Ridley's lair in Zero Mission.
The SA-X sequences in Fusion. All of them.
Fighting my way out of the darkened phendrana lab in Prime.
The characters and dialogue of Other M.
The dark Torvus undertemple in Echoes.
The buildup to the metroid queen in Return of Samus.

This. They were scary until I realized they were scripted, at which point they just became scary in an entirely different way. Fusion remains the scariest Metroid game for me, I think.

Let's see....
the Pirate labs in Phendrana, starting with the first metroid you fought. Though the dark labs were a special memory for me (ugh).
As well, when you open that one door to the Sunchamber, and that Chozo Ghost is just right there and runs away from you. In fact, my first time through, Chozo Ghosts scared me a whole lot (mainly because they were hard to kill and showed up EVERYWHERE).
I jumped when Serris first charges you in AQA. My older brother did the same when he played that boss for the first time.
The SA-X fight in TRO. That took me TOTALLY off-guard, especially considering I thought I was FINALLY in the clear after beating Yakuza. A few other SA-X moments were unsettling, but that one takes the cake, for sure.
Echoes for me has a very oppressive feeling of dread until you gain the dark suit. And there are plenty of parts in Echoes were I proceeded with extreme caution everywhere, afraid of what would come out at me.

I'll have to agree with this-- I remember the music being as equally haunting-- that part of the game really scared me. You'd enter what seems to be a normal room then all of a sudden the lights would go out and your standing in the near darkness. The music starts to play as you see eerie neon blue lights form into the bodies of the dead Chozo ghosts. They are angered by your presence and want to kill you-- Yah-- a very haunting Metroid moment. Unfortunately SA-X didn't scare me as much because I knew about that before I played but if I hadn't it would have been a real shocker. Another moment I was surprised about was the ending to the Crocomire fight--boy was that freaky! My heart raced out of my chest-- it's amazing what pixels can do to you. One in MP3 scared me for a different reason was when Samus started throwing up-- I thought something really horrific was going to happen to her-- but that wasn't the case. Other M didn't scare me hardly at all the only moment when I think I jumped was when Phantoon's tentacle slammed the glass-- that was all I needed to be freaked out--!

Any chases where you cannot fight back your hunter (SA-X in fusion, Space Pirates with the Zero Suit in Zero Mission)
Dark Aether's atomesphere without the Dark Suit: when you get out of the light spheres, you have to know where the next sphere is first

Let me refer you to this. When you've played enough Metroids, you know when something is going to jump out at you. It's just a matter of when. Until then.... That said, here are some of mine: -Any time a boss/miniboss popped out of nowhere in Other M. -SA-X. I know it's been said but she still terrifies me. -The Valhalla in Prime 3 -While we're on Prime 3, the whole section on Elysia with the Phazon Metroids. I remember opening the door and this dead Pirate's right there, and then he disintegrates. I seriously considered turning around and leaving.
Metroids are not pets. Metroids are not to be used for target practice.

Fusion has its momenets as others have already said. Although the Valhalla and Pirate Lab on Elysia are in a league of their own compared to just about everything else in the series simply in terms of 'fear factor'. Although the latter is somewhat dimisned by how ridiculous Phazon Metroids look and the fact Elysia frequently blinds people with excessive bloom thus rendering the gloomy atmosphere ineffective.

You guys are all so young. The scariest things in Metroid were all in Super Metroid for me. I played it as a kid and basically it freaked me out in various ways, but the most obvious ones are...
CROCOMIRE. That noise he makes. That noise he makes when he's melting in the LAVA. The way his skin falls off. The way his eyes melt. The way he's still ALIVE. That's terrifying.
His skull staying there freaked me out too, I kept expecting it to come to life.
The Wrecked Ship was also scary, especially the first time you go there. The fact that a creepy ghost will appear ON TOP OF YOU scared the heck out of me. The music was really sinister as well. Phantoon isn't as scary as them but he's still pretty spooky.
Nothing in Prime scared me, the only thing that sort of scared me in that series were the Bloggs in Torvus Bog, simply because they were hard to fight, hard to keep an eye on and very dangerous, but Nightmare in Fusion is freaky as heck.
