Yes, yes it is. Kirby is just another platformer to me, with a few interesting ideas but nothing super duper special.

Metroid essentially created its own sub-genre of gaming: Metroidvania. It also had one of the first female protagonists in gaming.

It's not that accurate, unfortunately. I've discussed with others that we should do our own, MDb-styled version of these, to make up for its shortcomings. They even used our site as a resource (w/out asking or even mentioning it to any of us, of course). Hey, any publicity is good publicity, right?
I would love to see an MDb version of this!

I'd love to see that as well, both as a "take that!" to those who used MdB's ressources without permission, and getting all the facts straight. All we need is a good enough voice-over, footage from all the games (IG videos, artworks, as well as interviews) and entertaining editing (see Gametrailer's take on the metroid retrospective).

As for this anniversary fiasco... yeah I'm kind of pissed as well.

To be fair they also did nothing for DK's 30th anniversary.

I could have sworn they did an Iwata Asks about this. It contained original pixel art drawings of Donkey Kong and Pauline and Mario. Can't find the link though - it might be buried in Mario's 25th.

It's just sad that Metroid doesn't get the props it deserves, cause it really is fantastic. I mean, Mario has put out some awesome games (Mario Galaxy? Sunshine? What's that?) like the Paper Mario games (TTYD for the win!!), and I don't mind that game getting a lot of attention, same with Zelda. (I bought my husband the Special Edition Zelda Themed 3DS/Ocarina of Time 3D set for Christmas. He cried. XD) I would just love to see Metroid get SOME recognition, like affordable Samus figures or Ridley or Metroid plushies, etc. I'd nerdgasm over a Metroid-themed 3DS. But Kirby? I have not played that game, but it seems like a "just for fun" type of game, not something worth practically making an Olympic sport for gamers out of, like Metroid. (Speedrunning, 100% collection, low percent completion, etc.) I mean, I know it's cheesy, but it's awesome that Metroid is a game that encourages us to set goals, like for me I want to do a speed run with 50% completion in Super Metroid. Games like Kirby just sound like a "just beat the game and have fun" type of game (that I would like to try one day). Does any of this make sense or am I just rambling? XD

Sadly, the closest thing to recognition I've seen was at Walmart, where they had one of those large displays announcing Other M on one of the theft sensors by the doors, before I started playing the Metroid games.

Nintendo has a $10.5 billion war chest. They honestly can't spend an infinitesimal sum of that on the 25th Anniversary of one of gaming's landmark properties?

There must be something between orchestral concerts (definitely way out of Metroid's appeal range) and dumping a bunch of ROMs on a Wii disc ( :/ :/ :/ ).

I'm considering writing them and I think if we all write them the same letter they might get the picture and do something. of course that only wishful thinking but we could try. What do you think?

By the time they actually listen to us, the WiiU will be halfway through its life cycle. See: Xenoblade Chronicles, Last Story, etc

^I kinda agree.

Nintendo has a right to give and honor Kirby's Anniversary, just take a look at Nintendo's history. It was thanks to the legal counsel for that lawsuit with the 'Donkey Kong'/'King Kong' case (Read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Kirby_%28attorney%29) that they Kirby even came to be. Nintendo still feels like they owe him.

Another thing-- You know how big some niche-markets are...?
Hello Kitty is a perfect example and I personally feel like Nintendo is using Kirby as it's 'Hello Kitty' for the fans and it's marketing. Because they gear it to the 'cute-factor' market, it does better and gets more sells even if it's an ok plat-former game.

Nintendo is an company first and foremost and they want money--that's all there is.
Sure, I'd like to think they think highly of the fans but sometimes I believe they look at the games sells-record and how popular it is. Sadly Metroid still hasn't reached it's full-potential in that department.

If Nintendo doesn't honor Metroid's 25 anniversary, sure I'll be disappoint-- But at least fellow fans are stepping up to the challenge and are showing Samus some respect (Shine-sparkers, MDB, etc) and props to them. :metroid:

Or worse, they could end up pulling a SEGA and outright trolling their fans.

While that may be part of the story, some of what I had come across in the history of Kirby was that he was a stand-in while in development, and the team fell in love with his "character" despite the fact the initial plan was to replace the Kirby sprite with something else. And the name in part could have come from the Kirby vacuums, considering he sucks things up.

As for the lack of the Metroid anniversary, I'm pretty sad, too. I guess it's come as a harsh realization that Metroid isn't nearly as popular and loved as I have always remembered it to be.

Also, no 25th? It's as if Nintendo WANTS Metroid to die. Just because it hasn't been a cash cow. They haven't been marketing it, they've put less effort into it, it becomes less of a cash cow, and they cut it even more. Nintendo, I fuqing hate you now.

I recently read about the Kirby collection via Kotaku. I do find it strange that there was mentioning of a Metroid collection.
Its been past 20+ years already for the series. It doesn't seem quite fair that there has been nothing brought up on Nintendo's behalf. Perhaps they are letting it go? Or working on a surprise?

Or they feel ashamed about Other M's reception and are not doing anything Metroid-wise at all for another decade.
