My ideal size would be something like 40 people working on the game, with at least half of those folks dedicated programmers. That way there'd be less of a hassle coordinating the project from a directorial point of view (I think several problems in Other M stem from the insurmountable obstacles of communication between three different studios).

This would be cool, but could you even make an HD game with such a small group? Guess that wouldn't be a big deal. It's not like a 3DS or eShop Metroid would be a bad thing.

Well, if Super Metroid could be made in its entirety by a team of 15 people, then I'm sure something more than double that can make some really great strides.

Fifteen guys write and develop - Super Metroid
ONE GUY writes and develops all on his own - Cave Story

But on the flip side:
A studio of 78 guys with help from Nintendo - Metroid Prime AND its ensuing trilogy

It's not the dev team size that matters, it's the coordination between everyone involved that counts.
