Something bugging me in MP3

In MP3, when you're fighting Meta Ridley, you are on the GDF planet, Norion. Also, when you fight him, you are falling down a 3000- 5000 meter vertical tunnel or shaft large enough to fit Ridley, who's laying on his back the whole time. My question is, why would the GDF have a 5000 meter vertical shaft? Theories?

Maybe as a means of transport? Perhaps there was an elevator of some sort there that Meta Ridley destroyed when he broke through the top of the shaft.

Maybe the generator in that room extends down there for..... special purposes.....

Obviously it's the escape shaft for when the AU unit blows up and decides to set off the planetary self-destruct.

Maybe it's some sort of take-off system. What I mean is, in a lot of Godzilla movies, there's a vertical shaft, and at the bottom, there is a circular lift which brings up some sort of aircraft. Then it takes off.

Well, look at it this way. It's in the Generator room, right? Why do they need a Generator? To power the space cannon thing. Why do they need a space cannon thing? To protect the planet? Why do they need the planet?

Absolutely nothing is needed. So the answer is that it serves no purpose. A better question would be why can't we visit the other floors of the Norion base? You can see them in the elevator but you can't go there. Perhaps it's just there for aesthetics? Like the shaft?

If you want to get creative, perhaps it is a Thermal borehole. Like, the core's heat is pumped up to power the generator.

Why would they colonise a planet and not defend it?

Games always show areas you cant access, makes the environment your in feel more natural and not just a closed box.

The shaft is just a gameplay device in order for that battle to take place though, there's no indication before or after the batter what it's purpose was for sadly.
