Metroid Prime Hunters on 3DS

Postby CapCom » 12.08.12 11:42pm

So now that I have a 3DS, I've decided to sit down and try Hunters with a few different control schemes. Last time I played was just with the dual controls (D-pad for movement, ABXY for aiming). I'm a lefty, so using the stylus was very uncomfortable, especially since you had to hold the thing (which starts to cramp my hand really quickly). Now that Kid Icarus has given us a stand (rather than trying to fix underlying problems with the control scheme, and thus making a portable system sit on your desk), I can play Hunters finally with the stylus. One of the big problems I had with this game was the aiming, as using ABXY or D-pad really doesn't work well at all. So anyway, my least favorite Metroid game seven years later.

First off, lefty stylus (which feels more comfortable holding the stylus) is impossible for me to aim, and the move/shoot is impossible. What do you expect when every single controller has a d-pad or analog stick on the left side? The world of videogames privileges righties, and that's the way it's going to be. This means once again I am stuck using my non-dominant hand to aim. Got some training this way with Kid Icarus. It's far easier to move and shoot for me this way, which, surprise surprise, was how Nintendo wants you to play it. And yeah, consistently pulling off headshots on the AI proves the superiority of aiming with the stylus. However, the small, crappy stylus digs into my hands. I guess I'll need one of those big, pen-shaped ones. Oh yeah, and moving with the circle pad feels natural.

Unfortunately... Jumping is a bitch. Double-tap to jump? Seriously? And two crummy shafts to climb up with identical platforms in just the first area? (Not to mention all the other rooms reused...) Metroid Prime wasn't a game where I had to think before I jumped. Because you have to do two inputs to perform one simple action, this is far from smooth. Of course, I COULD use the buttons to perform actions, but how am I supposed to do that while holding the stylus? (not to mention if I want to jump, aim, and shoot at the same time)

Weird things that make no sense:

-Why am I kicked out of Scan Visor mode after a cutscene?
-Inability to change control schemes from the pause menu (complained about before)
The sleep of Reason produces monsters.

"Until next time..."

Yeah... Hunters felt pretty unnatural for me, even though it was my first Prime. I am so looking forward to playing it on a 3DS (strange controls aside).
My only solution, sadly is the Circle Pad pro or whatever it's called. It's the only hope for lefties. I wish Nintendo would have at least put another circle pad on the side.
And as for the Visor cutscene thing, (assuming you're talking about boss fights) the game's cutscenes are pre-rendered, so rather than changing camera angles for a few seconds like in a stage, when it shows a video, it cuts from the previous gameplay for a sec, and then when control is returned it's easier for the programmers to assume that you didn't have the visor on so they make Samus spawn in the Boss room without it. Assuming otherwise, I dunno. If you still lose it say when you encounter a Hunter for the first time, that's just cheap, but I don't remember whether or not it happens. I heard Retro didn't do this game. No wonder it's not as good as it could be. :|
