well if you click on the "view results" option at the poll up top, all will be revealed to you.
Yeah, I know, I said that as a joke since everyone's been praising Super Metroid and Metroid 1 is the only one that didn't get any votes. I liked Metroid 1 and it was cool that you only needed to find a couple of items before pretty much the entire game was open to you. I just didn't have the patience to play through that entire game without using cheats. Zero Mission did you on way too long after Mother Brain. I liked the stealth mission, but then you do all that extra gameplay and the new final boss is Meta Ridley? And of course, it's one of the easiest fights in the entire game. The two Space Pirates at the end were more difficult then Meta Ridley. It was disappointing, I'm sure it'd be much more satisfying to put effort into beating Metroid 1 (without cheating) and finish with Mother Brain. I've still beaten Metroid: Zero Mission over 20 times tho, it's fun as hell!
~Kraid is best character and Other M is a great game.

You'll have to forgive me; with how some recent posts have been my "this is a joke and I'm not really an idiot" sensors have taken a dive.
I used to think that I couldn't beat Metroid without using the NARPAS SWORD0 cheat. However, I just printed up a map and played through the game a few times using said map, and once I internalized where everything was in my head, the game was loads of fun.
It's harder to do that for Metroid II, because the map kind of scrunches into itself in more than a few places (don't even know how that works) - look at a map of the gameworld of M2 and you'll see what i mean. Though generally the same principles apply.

I might just try that sometime. I already know where to find the first Energy Tank, the first Missle Tank, the Ice Beam, Kraid, and Ridley. That's really all you need, in fact I know how to get to Tourian without fighting Kraid and Ridley. I'm looking at a map of Metroid II and there are all sort of things wrong with it. It just doesn't fit together but it does anyway.

I tend to favor the original Metroid as my favorite of the sidescrollers. I have to say though that the only reason it became my favorite began with a print out of a map, otherwise I would have never gotten to experience what I really like about the game: new game plus. It's the only Metroid I recall having such a feature available for the next run, and of course this helps in traversing Zebes to ultimately acquire faster times. The big reward being able to play as Justin Bailey, which in itself is unique as it's the first time Samus is playable through an entire mission without her Power Suit. This replay value is further helped by simple controls, an excellent 8-bit soundtrack ( theme) and branching vibrant regions.

Zero Mission, unless you count AM2R.

I like fusion best as it fuzes together (see what they did there) lots of the best bits of the other games and it has a fair few nods to the older games. Having said that, It is way too easy and doesn't break any barriers but it does have cool music.
Having said that, Super Metroid has amazing music, is genuinely hard and incorporates a plot and advances the canon. It is the better game but I prefer Fusion.

My favourite of the 2D Metroid games has to be Zero Mission – it was the first one I got to play after getting into the series with Prime, and though SM came a very close second, I prefer ZM because it was made as the first within the series’ canon (and therefore seemed as good a place to start as any). I didn’t have the best of experiences starting out with it, though. The first copy that my parents bought me for Christmas was, unexpectedly, a pirated one that never saved my progress after turning off. Needless to say, we soon disposed of it and hunted down a genuine copy the following month, which arrived just in time for my 16th birthday. And once I’d properly got stuck into the game, there was no going back: it was unlike any other I’d played on the GBA thanks to its beautiful visuals and non-linear gameplay, and even after having it for the past four years (five this time next month), it still holds pride of place as the best GBA game I have ever played. Prime may have introduced me to Metroid, but it was ultimately Zero Mission that led me to become a full-fledged fan – and for that I owe it a huge debt of gratitude

I had to put my vote in for Super Metroid, just because. (To be fair though, it was difficult to choose.)
