Playing with a map of Metroid II makes Metroid II a whole lot of fun.
At least until you memorize the map of Metroid II.

Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?I haven't played all the 2D Metroids, but for me it's a tie between Fusion and Super.

Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?Super, easily.
There's just so much stuff in that game. Suckers.

Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?Super. Fusion was pretty good, but it was too easy, knowing where to go, and ZM is a close second to Super. The original Metroid was too damn hard to beat, and I've never played RoS.
Plus, with Super, you could be a pro at the game, getting 100% and the best ending every playthrough, and still find something new when you play. ![]() |

Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?Zero mission simply because it truly focused on the story of the original metroid and expanded on the core mechanics. I only felt the Chozo help system was annoying. I am grateful they decided to put in save stations. Goodness knows how complex passwords could be!

Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?Thankfully you can skip all of the chozo statues except for the very first one.

Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?I must amend my comment that was made a while back. I still think that Super Metroid is my favorite 2D Metroid, I think that any of the original trilogy are better than the newer 2D games. The original game was just difficult, plain and simple. The environmental dangers and the creeper enemies that roamed around Brinstar and Norfair (especially noting the inherent limitations of the software from 1986) had the game's difficulty at the ideal level for the whole game.
Metroid II had some impressive improvements over the original (item upgrades, etc) and all in all, it was a very worthy successor to Metroid. Great atmosphere with music and very well designed enemies. Super Metroid is so solidly designed and its merits are well enough known as to not have to repeat them here. |

Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?I do have to commend Metroid II's enemy design. For such a limited palette, there were obviously some duds in there. But by and large, they're unique and fun to look at (when you're not destroying them, that is).

Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?Super, was my first Metroid game and it came in a massive red box with big instruction manual, why I sold all my snes games I'll never know...

Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?Super Metroid or Fusion

Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?Super Metroid and Fusion are both absolutely amazing.
Zero Mission always has a special place in my books, because it was my first Metroid game. |

Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?Metroid Fusion and Super Metroid. Hands down.
First of all, Metroid Fusion was my first Metroid game, and I liked it so much I went looking for more. Samus is so graceful Now, Super Metroid. Oh dear god, so big. It basically defined Metroid, and paved the way for a lot of powerups. Gravity Suit, Grapple Beam, and others. The controls are very tight, there's a lot of techniques here and there, but still easy to play. And, many people still play and love this game. There, I made my statements. "Of course, missiles are off-limits." -Samus Aran
"The last Metroid is in captivity, the Galaxy is at peace..." -Dan Owsen "Metroids are not pets. Metroids are not target practice." -Space Pirate Logs |

Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?Kind of a tie between Zero Mission and Super, mostly ZM because of my personal nostalgia.

Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?Super is definitely my favorite, followed by Zero Mission and the original Metroid. It's mostly nostalgia value for the original, which barely left our NES, but I love the atmosphere of all three, and the creature design/aesthetic in general. The games have always looked really interesting and creative while still being fun to play.
