Agreed. |

Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?
I respect your opinion, but no. Zero Mission is the most polished and well-conceived 2D Metroid game out there. It's fun, challenging and non-linear without Super's lame control scheme. It basically took what Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion did right and placed it all in one game. Simply being able to do stuff like beat Ridley before Kraid (and then kill Kraid with 3 super missiles) or shinesparking the hell out of stuff makes so many replays enjoyable. And it has the best soundtrack, next to Super. |

Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?Metroid 1. Even though being most primitive, in each way compared to its successors, it had a unique raw creepyness to it and maybe intentional or not do to the limitations but the pure black backgrounds, the slow beeps, and rare weird things like the evil looking statues gave just enough to give the feeling of a long lost evil on the alien planet. Metroid 2 kind of captured this, Super Metroid was like a blockbuster version even though as a videogame it is really solid. A good comparison would be Metroid 1 being Terminator 1 while Super Metroid is Terminator 2, the widely loved one and more glossy but lacking that rawness of the first. M:ZM meanwhile pretty much goofyfied it.

Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?Super Metroid is the best 2D Metroid for perfecting the core Metroid formula, but Fusion is my personal favorite for it's tight design, pacing, atmosphere, vibrant yet spooky art style, and being much better at humanizing Samus than it's inferior big-budget Wii wannabe.
Zero Mission is, of course, a much more traditional Metroid game than Fusion, but the exploration loses it's charm when it's retreading Zebes for the third time. The next 2D Metroid needs an entirely new planet to explore, as well as new power-ups/bosses/puzzles/etc... it just needs to be "new", which Other M failed to be. Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?My preference in order...
Super (first by a long way) ... Fusion/Zero ... Metroid II ... Metroid (last by a long way) Super has everything and in my opinion deserves all the praise it gets. When it comes to the original Metroid I'm surprised a sequel was ever made as in my opinion it is not that good a game (even for the 8-bit consoles of the late 1980s), but that's a thread for another day when I'm feeling a little more lucid and a little less Garb "Wargle!"

Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?Favorite 2D has got to be, far and away, Super Metroid. The sheer immensity of Planet Zebes was breathtaking and the game physics were (mostly) excellent. It had a far superior physical control scheme as far as Samus is concerned (Zero Mission? Don't make me laugh.) I absolutely loved being able to wall jump off a single wall, calculate where exactly I would land and use the speed booster at will. The amount of backtracking in Super was purposeful but not tedious, the environments were beautiful and the music evoked such emotion that even fifteen years later almost brings me to tears.
The only complaint about Super Metroid I find legitimate is in regards to the weapon control scheme. It is rather clunky, and I found myself cursing at it more than once when I wanted Super Missiles and ended up with the Grapple Beam. MII would be a distant second. Despite everybody's complaints it is a remarkable game with revolutionary mechanics to the Metroid world. In 1986 no Metroid fan thought Samus would ever be able to crouch (even though they probably bitched about it just as much as Metroid fans today Fusion was a good game and I'm glad it followed Super, although this is where I see the Metroid franchise taking a severe downturn. I loved the ability to grab ledges in this game. I thought Super would have been far easier with this ability, and it seemed decently fluid as far as mechanics go. I thought the environments were decently diverse and was excited to see an ice environment for the first time in a 2D Metroid game. The music was decent, although at some times I thought it was overly complex and would have rather had more silence than a big heroic theme blaring out of the speaker. I did not enjoy the control scheme as much because, although it fixed some of the clunky-ness of Super Metroid (specifically having to scroll through the menu to get from missiles to Power Bombs) the physics were all jacked up. Players now had little to no control over the Samus character once a jump was initiated and the wall jump ability was so terribly hindered, it would be far easier to wait until the Space Jump was recovered than to stumble through such a badly crippled ability. Zero Mission had an interesting storyline and I thought it had an interesting perspective on how Samus got her "new" suit. However, everything bad about the control scheme in Fusion was amplified by 10x in this game. Jumping is so horribly fractured, I avoided it at all costs. The Power Grip seemed like it had been included as an afterthought and required so much more effort to activate than its non-item counterpart in Fusion. As far as I'm concerned, this is the bastard child of the Metroid franchise and I'd much rather pretend it didn't exist. There's my two cents. Agree or not, that's what I think. Peace Raid |

Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?It's interesting to notice how almost every Metroid game is somebody's favorite. Few franchises can boast of such a condition.

Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?Over the years (admittedly, it has not been many years!) Super Metroid has wormed its way into my heart. Or perhaps it was claiming its rightful spot?
But really, its good points (of which there are too many for me to enumerate) convince me more and more that it is the near-perfect game, if not one of THE perfect games ever made. It's fast, I don't need to waste 30 hours playing it. It's architecture and level-design are perfect- there is no slogging around with boring areas (like the Crateria of Zero Mission, as well as several other parts of Zero Mission); everything leads exactly to where you WANT to go, and NEED to go. Related to the first point, it encourages thinking outside the box with its emphasis on both speed and item collection, and was really the first title in the series to really push for both. This has led to such amazing feats like people getting 100% in an hour -something I could never hope to do! But I think it has some of the most fun-factor in any Metroid game, at least in the classic series (the Prime games have their own types of fun that are wholly unrelated to the main series). When I was younger, I liked Zero Mission more, but Super just holds up to its weight, while certain aspects of Zero Mission kind of stick out a little too much for comfort (changing some of the architecture just to make roundabout paths for the sake of roundabout paths). the other main games, Metroid, M2, and M4, all have that fun factor as well, but Super takes the cake.

This is the reason that all Metroid games took time because they are all great. ![]() |

Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?Super Metroid. It's the quintessential Metroid game. Pretty much everything that makes Metroid great was at or near its best here. It's not only the best 2D Metroid game I feel it's one of the best 2D games of all time. It also inspired other great series like Castlevania.
Fusion comes next because it's got spectacular boss fights and a pretty impressive difficulty level. I didn't mind the story and increased linearity. I felt it was a very deserving sequel to Super Metroid that expands on that title well. It's familiar and new at the same time. The gameplay is classic Metroid but it doesn't fall into the trap of being a complete rehash. As for the others, I love the first two but they honestly haven't aged quite as well. Zero Mission I've been meaning to give another shot. I was disappointed in it back in the day because it was just too short and too easy for me. |

Again, the next thing is Earthbound and EB0 |

Re: Whats your favorite 2D Metroid and Why?Return of Samus for being the biggest evolution the series ever took, and for providing a unique atmosphere that is still sorely missed even today. Taking a break from that now overused escape sequence was really nice too.
