looking for fun stuff to do in the original metroid

Postby bowsersenemy » 12.13.10 7:16pm

i've done an almost complete run, twice, and i'm at mother brain in the "second quest" run, where you start with varia, ice, bombs HJ boots and screw attack. kraid was a wimp this run. missiled, ice beamed, and screw attacked him, and when i got low on health (fought him with only 1 extra tank), i got the energy tank and finished him off. ridley was even easier. went behind him, got the energy tank, came back in, and tried icing him, but that didn't work too well. neither did the screw attack. so what did i do? got on the lower floor right smack in front of him, and loaded his feet full of missiles. i'm kinda stuck on MB, but that's mostly because of a flaw in my strategy (only 4 energy tanks, and they're not all full).

so really, i want something interesting to do for my next run. as for SBing, all i did was get the varia early once, with wall jumping. i want to know a few interesting glitches, a good low % run, or something just abnormal.

note: i'm playing the VC version, so any secret worlds you may mention, may not be in this version. i've tested it: the wii version, metroid prime version, zero mission version, and NES version, all four have the secret worlds shifted to some degree or another. haven't tested the NES classics GBA version, but i'd bet cash it's different too.

Quite honestly I was going through the same problems about a week ago. I can successfully recommend certain courses of action for you to take.

If you are unsure if you had explored and tried all viable paths for NES Metroid, I suggest finding one of the highly detailed maps of the game. Look up "NES Metroid map" for google images and click on the one that is around 7200x7600. It seriously gives you the location of every room, item, start point, and even displays the enemies.

You may know that the NES Metroid is on multiple games and hardware including: Metroid Prime, Metroid Zero Mission, Virtual Console, and the Classic NES GBA Cartridge. Metroid Prime's version is from 2002, so what I may say may not apply for Prime. The MZM, VC, and the GBA versions of the NES Metroid are updated ROMs from 2004. As such, they took out passwords enabling exploration of secret worlds and glitch exploitation (NARPAS SWORD0 000000 000000 and JUSTIN BAILEY 000000 000000 still work BTW). The collision data has also been updated as you can no longer attempt the Door jump to get to the secret worlds. What does this all mean? It means that Nintendo had effectively got rid of the secret worlds, seeing them as nothing more than a glitch.

So what happens if you know the entire map and you cannot access the secret worlds/know what they contain? Congratulations - You win the title of NES Metroid Champion in addition to having a lot of time on your hands to complete the adventure so thoroughly. In all seriousness, however, you can either obtain the original Metroid ROM to attempt the door jump or, using the same ROM, design your own NES Metroid. Of course you can always expand upon the original map if so desired. If you desire to edit or create a new NES Metroid, you could use Editroid which is already much more featured than MetEdit.

Currently I have the map in hand for a final playthrough while also designing my own NES Metroid. In designing my own, I think little of other people playing it because (if I'm assuming this correctly) I am creating it for my own personal enjoyment. If I find that it is stable and easy enough for others I may consider making an IPS patch publicly available but for the most part you are designing this for yourself.

If you need help at any point with Editroid or Metroid ROM editing in general, you can obviously reply to me or PM me. If you want to save yourself google searches (even for the map images) you can still PM me.

As far as I know, there's no low% run of Metroid. If you REALLY wanted a challenge, you could find out how little energy you would need to beat Mother Brain. If you could do it without losing a tank, that would be something incredible (ESPECIALLY if it was done on actual hardware). However, I don't think you could beat it without the Varia...only you can't really get that without the High Jump Boots!

So why don't you use the edit button?

I'm fairly certain that Mother Brain calculates how many times she blasts you with the Hyper Beam while accounting for the damage reduction of the Varia Suit. In that, I mean she assumes you have the Varia. If you're in the position where your health is enough to survive a Hyper if you had the Varia but not without, she'll blast you and you will die every time.

I'm not experienced in calculating a low-% run, but I'm fairly certain it would be better to pick up the High-Jump and Varia than the half a dozen or so extra tanks you need to survive Mother Brain.

Er, this is the original Metroid, so there is no Hyper Beam. I say try to do a 5% run. Getting only what you need for MB and using against everyone else.
