I HATE the grapple beam <3Okay. So I am new to Super Metroid. I must actually preface this by saying that I usually play games (grandma games, as one of my friends calls them) such as Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, any Legend of Zelda, Earthbound, Bubble Bobble (trying to beat high score on Twin Galaxies..ugh) and lots of random n.e.s and s.n.e.s games..ANYHOW. I love SM..it's different from anything that I have played in the past (DUH) however, I kind of feel like a complete retard playing it. I never know where to go. and WHY can't I master using the stupid grapple beam. I usually play for an hour and then get really frustrated and stop and never want to play ever again. Does or has anyone else completely DETESTED using the grapple beam, and does it EVER GET EASIER?

Re: I HATE the grapple beam <3I got the hang of the Grapple Beam damn fast. You just need to know where to stand and when to let go.

Re: I HATE the grapple beam <3I might know what your problem with the grapple beam is. Say you are spinning around in a circle holding a ball, then let go of the ball. Does the ball travel in a straight line or a curved line? Intuition tells us it travels in a curved line, but in reality it travels in a straight line.
The grapple beam follows the real laws of physics, as soon as you let go you shoot off in the direction you were traveling the moment you let go, at the speed you were traveling at the moment you let go (until gravity takes over). This might be a bit jarring at first if you expect to travel in a curved line. So keep in mind Newton's first law of motion: First law: Every body remains in a state of rest or uniform motion (constant velocity) unless it is acted upon by an external unbalanced force. This means that in the absence of a non-zero net force, the center of mass of a body either remains at rest, or moves at a constant speed in a straight line. Another thing: just before you let go, make sure you let go of the control pad. While in the air, pushing the control pad in a particular direction will push you in that direction. So if you are holding the control pad in order to build up speed while spinning, but then keep it held down once you release the grapple, it can push you in an unexpected direction. As for where to go next, that just takes exploration, although memory helps (remembering areas you couldn't access before). Just think about the game world as one giant zelda dungeon with a bunch of bosses. After a few play-throughs it becomes second nature. Re: I HATE the grapple beam <3Thank you! I've been trying to master the skill. I think my problem may be due to the fact that I don't play the game as consistently as I should. I play MAYBE 1 time a week, sometimes less than that. I'll do some practicing

Re: I HATE the grapple beam <3Those large rooms in Maridia with the grapple walls made me hate the grapple beam in Super.
The damn thing feels like trying to steer a three-legged cow hopped up on tranquilizers on a six-lane highway.

Re: I HATE the grapple beam <3They can be a little annoying, but there is no need to use the walls in any of the rooms that have them so I personally just avoid them.

Re: I HATE the grapple beam <3Grapple beam is like wall-jumping. it's super frustrating in the beginning, but you will get the hang of it in the end.

Re: I HATE the grapple beam <3An easy trick is to use the right shoulder trigger to aim up at an angle and just remember to hold down the button when you fire. Then swing back and fourth and time your jump. Hold the direction you want to go or Samus will fall straight down or down at an angle.

Re: I HATE the grapple beam <3Ahhh..Well..I mastered swinging from the ceiling using the grapple beam (kinda??) hahaha. My new problem is climbing vertically with it.
Every time I come to a point where I am going to need to use the grapple beam...my hands start sweating and my blood pressure rises just a little. I'm so used to playing these relaxing games that require little to no concentration and skill...I gotta get out of my grandma games! This game is super intense. I'm going to write a review when I have completed the game. Excited! <3<3<3<3<3xoxoxo bblgm |

Re: I HATE the grapple beam <3Many some people mentioned that Maridia room with the Phantoon like jellyfish made them hate the grappling beam. Not in my case, that room made me hate... that room, and made me love the grapple because it helped me go through the obstacles there

Remembuh this kids! Say NO to phazon! (unless you have the appropiate equipment)

Re: I HATE the grapple beam <3The Grappling Beam doesn't really take much effort to learn. A few areas may be complicating, such as Maridia.
I personally like the Grappling Beam, but it becomes useless after you obtain the Space Jump, or if you know how to wall jump. |

Re: I HATE the grapple beam <3To quote Dr. Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory, "Ah Gravity, thou art a heartless bitch." To be honest, when I had first played Super Metroid, I epically sucked with the Grapple Beam and had never even heard of Wall-Jumping. As long as you keep practicing and trying new things you will eventually get the hang of it. I very rarely use the Grapple Beam anymore (I've been trying the 25% run and you can't pick it up with that) so the Wall Jump has become my best friend.
Main take-away: Keep trying and don't get down on yourself if you can't do it the first few (hundred) times. Peace Raid |

Re: I HATE the grapple beam <3i will totally practice wall jumping for sure. My boyfriend has helped me a couple of times....he actually informed me that i will no longer need to worry about the grapple beam soon..so. UGH. I'm glad that other people had problems with it..I feel like such a retard
