Yeah, 2.2 didn't change those rooms in the non-hard version.

I'd just save state before the room, save state when you get to the enemy spawn, and then finish the room. Hold the run button the whole time obviously.

Note that if you're bombing blocks during the hell run, you can just shoot them instead to save time.

If it's still too hard, turn the speed on your emulator down to 50%.

While it is possible to have 249 life at this point, it's really expected that you have 199--getting the 3rd energy tank is slightly tricky without the high jump boots (although not difficult if you know some special moves).

In fact, I seem to recall doing the hell run on 99 life back in my low-% run.

Are you guys saying that the one room hell run is hard? Pffthahahaha!

Seriously, its not that hard, true you can shoot the blocks saving time and life, but there are also novas and the respawning bugs in the little pipe. With that much, you can't honestly be thinking its that hard.

Also, just a tip, when you go to get grapple, remember ZM for that moment.

It can be hard if your controls are poorly arranged. Other than that, nah, it's not hard.

Yeah I've read comments elsewhere by people who absolutely *REFUSE* to even attempt the game because they're afraid of the Hell's Run. It's 1 friggin' room ya crybabies!!! >_<X This isn't Redesign where you have to traverse like half of Norfair Varia-less :/

Managed to do it in the end without slowing the emulator down and ended up with 49 health by the time I got to the pink door at the other end  Killing the enemies on the way and getting their health was the key. First of all I was using missiles and every time I killed one of the critters I would get missiles not health energy! Needless to say I died a few times doing it that way 8B

For anybody who has beaten the game and isn't adverse to having to perform lots of tricks, I'd highly recommend the hard mode hack.

Aside from just making some rooms harder, the main changes are:
Getting the Varia suit requires collecting 28 super missiles and unlocking the level 3 door. This means you have to go through Norfair (including Ridley) and Tourain suitless.

Super missiles aren't found until Ridley's lair, so you won't have them for Kraid.

Beating Phantoon gets you the X-ray instead of power bombs. Power bombs are located where the X-ray used to be, in the Pirate ship. This makes navigating the pirate ship a LOT harder.

The door to Botwoon is a level 4 door, so you need to beat Golden Torizo without your full suit.

Many of the sequence breaks possible in the original are removed in the hard mode hack. There might still be some, but I didn't notice any major ones that are still left.
And you're serious about all this? I beat the game, now its time for a challenge! I can do this, the hardest part would be the suitless game, and suitless Torizo, I almost died with gravity rather than without.

I WILL REPORT BACK WHEN I WIN.

Yes, I'm serious, and I beat it. There was a fair amount of using save states and slowing the game down to 50%, though.

There's two patches. One says hard, the other doesn't.

If you follow the intended sequence (which most players will naturally do on their first time through), this game really doesn't require many insane maneuvers. Probably the most challenging part is
escaping the pirate ship after killing Ridley,
but this is largely because you think you can do stuff there at this point when you really can't.

That said, it is possible to ignore huge chunks of this sequence, and this lends the hack a lot of replay value.
Morphing ball
Missile
Charge Beam
Chozodia for Bombs
(Very short) hell run in upper Norfair -> Chozodia for grapple
Brinstar for Varia suit
Upper norfair sequence for ice beam
Kraid's lair, get super missiles, spazer, and secret item #1
Kill Kraid (use ice beam to freeze platforms), get speed booster, unlock lock #1
Upper norfair, get high jump boots
Upper norfair, wave beam
Upper norfair, spring ball
Ridley, get secret item #2
Kill Ridley
Enter pirate ship, unlock lock #2, then exit ship
Tourain, kill mother brain and escape
Re-enter tourain, kill phantoon and sneak past giant metroid.
Tourain, get power bombs and secret item #3
Enter Chozodia via lower right exit from pirate ship
Kill Botwoon, get fully powered suit
Kill Golden Torizo, unlock lock #4
Go to pirate ship, kill Mecha Ridley
I just noticed that this set of directions seems to have something a bit out of order...
The spring ball
Which seems to be needed to get the first unknown item. Some of us aren't that good at bomb jumping.

Not sure what you're talking about. The unknown item in Kraid's lair has nothing to do with bomb jumping. Maybe there is a midair morph, but definitely no bomb jumping.

Actually, all you really need to know is how to get out of the Ice beam room, without Super missiles, OR how to wall jump with those stupid enemies in a small shaft. And do a small room hell run.

every other item, except for grapple and Ice takes a trick, nothing about Spazer, Space jump, Screw attack or plasma beam, even gravity. it takes nothing, besides, you don't even need to get the space jump first thing, you can wait, beat tourian, come back for level 3, get plasma beam then take the hidden route back down to get the space jump.

Yes, there is a hidden route between them, but that's a spoiler now isn't it?
