Hello

For years I've been wondering why this metroid password is never mentioned anywhere:

Code: Select all
JUSTIN BADLEY

The second row should be completely empty. This password only works for the US version, so if you're testing using an emulator, be sure to use rom file named "Metroid (U).nes".

This password has always confused me. I wrote a letter once to Finland's nintendo magazine, called Nintendo-Lehti, but they didn't seem to get the password working. Obviously, they were using the european version. We had a modded version of NES back then, so our game was probably the US version (I can't be sure, I have sold that cartridge and bought a new one later on).

The game begins from Kraid's Lair, with Samus without the suit. You do have missiles, but you don't have any left. When you go to Brinstar to get the Morph Ball, it's not there. So that's pretty much it. You can't complete the game ;)

I've never heard of this in my life.

It *sounds* like a grossly inaccurate translation of "JUSTIN BAILEY", which has a similar effect but starts you in Norfair with a all equipment save Ice Beam, many tanks, and many missiles. Also, no power suit at all.

I made a video of using that password, so this would be easier for people to view:

The thing of it is, NES Metroid's password system is not a particularly advanced device. You can enter all sorts of things into it and get a result. JUSTIN BAILEY for instance is a pure fluke; a funny sounding phrase that just happened to give you some cool stuff while starting you off on the second quest. between the different *NES* versions of the game, there are many funny passwords (though there are no funny passwords at all for the Japanese version, for what should be fairly obvious reasons.)

The following all have an effect in one version or another.

JUSTIN BAILEY
------ ------

s o m e - 1 s e t - u p
u s - t h e B 0 M B 1 1

g u n p e i y o k o i ?
X 1 1 1 1 1 X X X X X X

j u s t i n b a i l e y
- - - - - - - - - - - -

ENGAGE RIDLEY
MOTHER FUCKER

(not making that up)

Of all these, there is one password which is very intentional, and not a hilarious coincidence.

NARPAS SWORD0
000000 000000

North American Release Password. basically gives you everything, and health and missiles are infinite.

Well that makes sense. After reading your post and some googling I found out there are many weird passwords out there, some of which I already knew. The countless times I tried to beat the game using that "JUSTIN BADLEY" code... :geemer:

ENGAGE RIDLEY MOTHER FUCKER is the only password that is too hardcore for Metroid. It's a shame, because it's the best password ever.

Most passwords are sort of random configurations that sort of just happen to work, because of the malleability of Metroid's password system. Though some of them do seem like they were intentional, like the Yokoi code (though that's probably chance too).

It's a funny find, though, like JUSTIN BADLEY is some cheap Chinese knockoff.

ENGAGE RIDLEY MOTHER FUCKER is valid, but it takes me to the title screen in zero mission's original metroid mode.

On the original cart, as I understand, it glitches and crashes the game. The effects are different, it would seem:
NES

NES emulated

3DS VC
