Uh...I don't get it. I considered the SA-X made before Dark Samus, unless you think the end sequence of Prime 1 was planned in advance long before MF.
They were seperately conceived at about the same time by two independent groups. But I think Lazarius meant that the “evil twin/clone” thing is a very old trope.
Lazarius wrote:That and that he called a clone original. Which is ridiculous.
Ridiculous is you posting this just after he already having said that.

to me SM is number one. firstly i love the story behind the super metroid how it cares has feellings for you as it dies to save you.
the atmosphere is superb.
the game music is great and is just right for each area. for me it has it all and is the game all other metroid games are judged against.

Definitely Super Metroid for me. I really liked the exploring, controls, graphics and music. It might be my favourite game.

I picked Super Metroid, which is my favorite of the 2D Metroids. My favorite games from the entire Metroid Series is a toss-up between Prime 1 and Prime 3, with Prime 2 as a runner-up. I'm leaning more towards Prime 3.

What, Return doesn't get any love? For me Return is the best, it was the first game I owned and actually the first game I played. Super is a very close second though.

This is kind of an odd thread, since I thought it was generally accepted that Super is the best 2D Metroid. And the results of the poll seem to confirm that.
Regardless, I personally quite like Fusion and ZM, as they were my first Metroid games and I probably played them the most. Road trips are made much more bearable that way!
Currently playing: Metroid Prime Trilogy

While they're all very, VERY good games, I liked Fusion best. Then Super, then ZM, then the original/MII

Zero Mission is my favorite. It's insanely fun and I've beaten at least over 20 times now.

Super, by a landslide. I still love RoS and ZM. I haaaaaated Fusion. The flow felt clunky to me, and it was way too linear. Would not let me go back and explore things as I wanted like I could in any of the other 2D Metroids. Some of the bosses are superbly obnoxious to a point that I just won't play it anymore out of frustration. I love the music in Super, the graphics, the gameplay, everything. I've played it through a million times and I still don't get tired of it. I replay value in a game.

As i get older, i actually appreciate Metroid 1 on the NES more and more.
It's a very, very tightly-crafted game. It may not look that great in the gfx department, but it is one heck of a fun ride, even after all these years.
it probably has something to do with the limited weapon list and lock-n-key system meant that after you got a few things (5 missiles, bombs) the whole game world is open for you to explore. Uninhibited exploration, whether intended or not! That's something pretty special and hasn't been replicated since the first iteration (each successive game, with all the beams and other upgrades, etc).
Now, I still love Super Metroid the most, but again, Metroid has a very special quality about it.

I totally agree with you, Ing. It also has a difficulty level to it with how it's set up (You die, you go back to having 30 energy and whatnot), but it doesn't feel frustrating. I count NES games among the more difficult games out there, but they're still fun to play. You don't have to have awesome graphics or realistic 3D whatsit to have a kick-ass game.

NES game makers didn't have the ultra-high-def back then, but they knew how to make 8bit look awesome and play even better. It makes me miss the days where graphic design trumped graphic quality (which, I do have to admit, helps).

Well, I wouldn't say it's not without its frustration, Tianna! These forums are littered with frustrated posts about progressing through the game, ha. I think, however, that once you learn the system of Metroid, it becomes a whole other m experience. That's sort of true for any game, but even more so in the Metroid games. Once you know how to do things, your way of play becomes totally different, as you do stuff such as sequence breaking, or speed-running, or doing low-item runs, etc. Like, after that initial hurdle the "DAMMIT WHY DOES THIS GAME ONLY GIVE ME 30 ENERGY!?" moments stop, and it's more a game of item management, seeing how far you can reasonably explore before needing more ammo/health, etc. and yeah, nes games are hard stuff. If you want a NES game that looks good and plays good, Irem's Metal Storm is a pretty neat specimen. Parallax scrolling in a NES game!
