Stacking Hack Patches?

Is it possible to input more than one patch on a given Metroid game?

For instance, let's say I'm using the already-patched Super Justin Bailey (old version) rom, which is a graphical patch--would it be possible to add another patch on top of it, like Arena, or would the new patch override the old one?

(obviously, the worst case scenario is that it would render the game completely borked--you don't need to tell me *that* )
