Also,

Do not make replies to a SPAM post in the topic where it is being spammed. There was one instance where 3 people made posts about it. Use this thread...as I'm not only deleting the SPAM posts, but the spam posts from members who follow up.

simply report it here and we'll take care of it.

thanks

Well, I deleted a shitload of users. If you had a username that was something unintelligible, chances are you were in the group. Anybody with an e-mail or website that has something to do with WOW or selling shit was roasted. Anybody with an e-mail from some place in Europe or Asia that tends to produce a lot of spambots was suspect. Any username added since mid-August was particularly examined.

I can't say how many I deleted, but it was a lot. I don't like having to go through stuff and delete things, but it's the only method I think is going to cut back on spambots, at least after they have been added.

I'm also going to work on a new username verification system, but last time I tried that, it was a bit difficult to find...

I think it's time for Metroid trivia. Make them scour Wikipedia for answers to randomly picked Metroid questions! Think of it as a test of knowledge in order to discuss Metroid with us. :D This wouldn't be verification, but actually application for an account.

Well, if I can't change the password, there may simply have to be a ban on new users until we can fix the problem.

I guess that's what comes with all the promotion SR388 brings, as well as the Manga and maybe even RedMage's clan tags :P

From my experiences as a moderator and working with admins, there is not concrete feasible solution.

I mean, yeah, you COULD ban new members from joining (yeah, and they don't post much anyway), but that still seems a tad bit out there.

The most you can do is find a spam-bot and IP-ban on site.

And in no way do I think they are drawn here by forum members. These things just find a random place and dump a single post, then leave.

I think admins can delete all of a user's posts, as well, so yeah.

Plus, if you try manually verifying each incoming e-mail, you'll be swamped.

And an application sounds inherently stupid to me.

I didn't mean an actual application, just like, a captcha. Except, it asks a question about the Metroid series pulled from a bank, and you have to enter the correct answer. I don't know how hard that would be to work into the system, but probably rather hard considering I've never seen the like of it before?

EI is a moderator? Or was that a joke... must be. EI as a moderator would doom us all.

That sounds like a great idea, I’m not sure I understand why it wouldn’t work?

I’ve seen something like that somewhere, if it pops up again, I will be sure to link it.

Blah, again?

Well, we did it for several years and had a lot of fun, though things did eventually slow to a crawl.

Please. I’ve moderated and even run several successful( until I got bored of them) forums myself.
You just need to have a bit of intelligence and a game plan. Maturity helps, but as we’ve seen, it’s not necessarily required.

I was chosen because the administrators saw me as being level-headed and mature.

I would think I have a certain level of maturity that goes beyond quite a few of you.

As evidenced by the fact that I did not just respond to an aside comment four times in a row making super-cool jokes.

But if you guys want me to be the 11-year-old you envision me to be, so let it be written, so let it be done.

Sorry, I honestly didn’t mean that to sound disparaging towards you, just phrased it badly.
Honestly, I’m surprised no one said anything similar when I mentioned moderating and running other forums.
