Suggestion: Automatic Image Resizing

Postby Remnants » 03.24.14 2:14pm

We've been seeing a lot of pics get shown in posts as of late, don't we? And not even confined to just the Fanart thread. Some images are quite large and can cause horizontal page stretch. In itself that's a little inconvenient but if there are one or more posts with test in excess of one line, it's going to be a little frustrating to constantly have to scroll side-to-side in order to read posts. The other option would be to select entire segments of posts, copy and then paste it to some text editor.

Just to throw this out there, my 14" screen display is already set to max resolution at 1366 pixels wide.

I can only describe what I see the feature do which is whenever an image whose resolution would cause horizontal page stretch were to be linked to using , the website shrinks the image to prevent that from happening. I think I know certain people who can tell me more about the algorithm itself.

Another reason why I bring this up is because I have been seeing such a feature implemented across multiple other boards already.

Your consideration is all I ask.

The simplest way to do this is to make a new bbcode tag. If you use:
Code: Select all
[image][/image]
in stead of
Code: Select all
[img][/img]
The image will be no wider than 960px. Let me know if this is too thin or whatever anyone feels about it.

Okiedoke, lessee how this works:

Perfect! That should hopefully solve most of our picture "problems", save, perhaps, for those rare incredibly "tall" images. Like the Zelda 25th Anniversary pic:

This sort of art is incredibly uncommon but it represents the previous problem in reverse. Is there a way for the bbcode to cut it off after a certain pixel height? I've seen other sites implement a toggle, where if the picture is too tall it's cropped from the top down a bit, then if clicked on it displays full size. That may all be more work than is necessary for something that barely shows up here, but it's something to think about.

Wow, that's it? I'll be sure to use that when I post images from now on. Thanks!

Oh and it would be helpful for this to be added to the BBCode guide. For anyone looking to see how BBCode works here, there's no way to know this Image

Yeah, it really does work well. Had I use the other Image code, the horizontal page stretch would have been simply grotesque
