To be fair though, the first tutorial dungeon in SS is Skyloft itself, just padded with a lot of character introductory business.

That's ridiculous. How long does it take to reach the overworld?

Also is it true that the companion character in SS is even more annoying than Navi?

Why are they still putting companion characters in Zelda games anyways? Having a sidekick who never shuts up defeats the point of having a silent protagonist.

There isn't an overworld in SS. And yeah Fi is rather annoying, though she just points out the obvious after something has been explained to you. Also it doesn't take 5 hours to reach the first dungeon/temple...

Well technically, it takes about a minute to "reach the overworld" after the first cutscene, assuming you consider the expansive sky the "overworld" and jumping off a ledge "reaching" it. If you don't, then it takes about 30-45 minutes if you know what you're doing.

The main problem I have is SS and the reason I've only finished a single replay of SS is because of its aggravatingly long cutscenes and Nintendo's decision that you have to beat the game on normal mode every time you want to start a new hero mode (aka the mode that's more difficult and lets you skip cutscenes). Even Other M let you start multiple new games and skip cutscenes after beating normal mode just once (which is why I still revisit that game on occasion).

I might play the game again... in a few years... when I'm really bored... I miss old-school Zelda games :( (what with their few/no cutscenes, short introductions, and story being implied rather than screamed in your face).

However, whining over the little details aside, the game IS fun enough to warrant at least one playthrough, assuming you're even half-way decent with the motion controls and don't mind a little backtracking (considering this is a metroid forum, I doubt many people here mind it that much). I'd recommend a rent at the very least.

The problem with modern Zelda games is they have increasingly treated the player like they're stupid.

For us intelligent players, it results in a slow build up and annoying characters that are there to keep the Casuals feeling safe.

This is not good for Zelda.

You know how Zelda 1 was meant to be a social experience? It didn't have any hand holding because they wanted people to talk to each other about the game.

I hope that the reason the Wii U has so many social features is because they want to recreate that kind of experience. You don't need hand holding when user hints are a system feature, so maybe Wii U Zelda won't be bogged down with unnecessary tutorials. Maybe it won't have tutorials at all.

This is Nintendo we're talking about, here. The company that legitimately believes their player base is a bunch of morons. They may have the best of intentions, and seem to genuinely want to help, be they still treat us like idiots and have for years. The Wii U isn't going to change that, certainly not with it's "wait a half hour or more for your public comments to be screened by our expert team of babysitters" messaging system. Games need some form of tutorial, an introduction to the mechanics, obvious or not, but a crazy crystal bitch always spouting inane useless chatter about the most mundane and trivial of things that you simply cannot ignore because the game won't let you as you're clearly to stupid to figure anything out on your own IS NOT A GOOD WAY TO DO IT. Get me in the game, give me a sword and shield and LET ME KILL THINGS. Present the option for more detailed analysis if I need it, but otherwise FUCK OFF. I wish to play the game, not be lectured about it. For all the flak Navi gets at least you were never forced to listen to her/read what she had to say. Well, almost never. Certainly much less Fi.

Couldn't agree more, Apothem. Nintendo seems to rarely compensate for experiences gamers who, ya know, actually know how to play the game. This is kind of why I hate the whole "casual gamer" mindset, it seems to just dumb down games in general, but that's for another discussion.

As for Skyward Sword, not only is its "tutorial" very long for a Zelda game but its yawn-inducing boredom. So far though the cutscenes aren't that bad at all when it comes to duration (though admittingly I'm not that far in the game, just got to
Lanayru Mining Facility
.

Though funny enough? I actually like Fi alot...

Though Maybe Zelda needs to stop with the companions in general.

And slightly off-topic, but why can't I still not change the difficulty setting in these games? Urrrrrrrrrrgh.

I don't remember excessive hand holding in Nintendo's other games.

This is a problem unique to Zelda. Kinda makes you wonder how they can get it so right with 3D Mario and so wrong with 3D Zelda.

The Mario games are insanely easy though, they don't need hand holding due to the simplistic gameplay. Zelda contains much more complicated game mechanics, mechanics that Nintendo thinks need explaining. I think it was Metal Gear Solid 2 that when you started the game asked if you played the previous game and depending on how you answered it would or wouldn't go over how certain things work when you started playing, something similar would be nice, or just add a difficulty option.

Thank you, Chris. That's what it needs. If they ask at the beginning if you've ever played Zelda, and remove annoying hints and long tutorials accordingly, it'll be much better.

I have yet to play the latest Zelda game. I was curious what is the current opinion of The Legend of Zelda: The Imasculation of Link is?

1. I think you mean emasculate, not imasculate.

2. When has Link EVER been tough and manly?

3. Why, when I click my "your posts" section to check responses, is your name the last post in every topic and yet you have really nothing meaningful to say?

His mother kicked him out of house, guess he's got issues, I'll stop there before get called a dick again.

To answer the question though, SS is a mixed bag as discussed on the past two pages...

I can understand being angry about the situation, but posting mostly irrelevant stuff?

And I am a dick, so I can take that.
