Everyone's favorite blue bomber, and someone with probably, alongside Sonic, one of the single largest fan-bases out there.

Why would someone like this game series?

Probably a combination of general quality (outside a few duds), likable cheery atmosphere (for the classic series and Legends at least) for the old-schoolers and the serious anime style for the younger kids (like X and Zero), consistently fun gameplay, soundtracks that have been remixed countless times, and of course, what we all love no matter what, wonderful character designs.

Image

If you ever look through that complete works book that capcom has for sale for ridiculous price, you really have to love Inafune's designs. They're great, and clearly inspired by Astro Boy robots- which I think are probably some of the best robot designs in animation.

So I'll start some things off with general rankings/lists that you guys can post if you want to or not. Or you can talk about the games.
All 6 of the original games can be found on Virtual NES right here:
http://www.virtualnes.com/list/m.html

So for those wanting to get into the series, you can start there or find ROMS, or go VC, or get the Anniversary Collection for the GC or PS2 (PS2 is preferred, mainly because of control options, and that it has remixed music). Highly recommended that you at least start out with 2, since that's where the series finds its stride for the next, oh, 20 or so years. There is also an X collection that I'd recommend for PS2/GC as well, and that's good because in that, they finally fixed the music of X3 so it doesn't sound like complete absolute crap.

Anyhoo:

Favorites of the Classic Series:
1. Mega Man 3
2. Mega Man 2
3. Mega Man 9
4. Mega Man 7
5. Mega Man 6
6. Mega Man 4
7. Mega Man and Bass
8. Mega Man 10
9. Mega Man 5
10. Mega Man

(never played 8. Love some of the music though)

I usually go back and forth between picking 3 and 2 as my over all favorite. I know a lot of 3 was rushed, but the amount of content in the game is pretty darn nice, and I think it'd be pretty much perfect if it weren't for those damnably annoying levels where you have to fight all of the MM2 Robot Masters again. It's really fucking annoying, and I think the levels themselves are unfair, like a mean hack. But over all, I really dig the game and enjoy playing it.

And even though stuff like MM5 and MM10 are towards the bottom, it's kinda like saying cookie dough is ranked below chocolate on my ice cream preference. I love them both, but I like one more than the other. The only game on that list that I think is just kinda eh is MMnB, but then again, that game itself was kinda rushed, too. With lots of cheap shit. Still fun though.

X series:
1.) X1, 2, 3, 4
2) X5
-
-
Boring) X6, X8
Absolute positive shit) X7 BURN TO THE GROUND BURN TO THE GROUND OOOOOH WOOOO BURN BURN BURN TO THE GROUND BURN TO THE GROUND OOOOOOH

The first 4 X games are pretty much perfect. Not much else to say there. They're perfect.

Zero Series:
1) Zero 2
2) Zero 1
3) Zero 4
4) Zero 3

Favorite Robot Master:
AIR MAN MOTHER FUCKER
Image

Best design best music best everything

Fav Maverick:
The best Maverick of them all will always be Flame Hyenard for his epic and gripping boss fight, but a distant second place is Spark Mandrill, followed by Chill Penguin

Favorite Wily Music:
Gotta go with Mega Man 4's Wily Stage 2. Yeah, not MM2 Wily 1, or MM9's We are the Robots, but this is probably one of the few times playing those old games where the Wily music got more upbeat and awesome as you got closer to Wily, as opposed to usually getting more sinister in the other games. It's pretty darn awesome. Honorable mention goes to Wily's music in Mega Man 5.

OVERALL PREFERENCES

1) Classic Series
2) X1-4
3) Zero Series
4) Legends
5) Yoshi Touch n' Go/ other X games
6) Battle Network
7) didn't play Starforce, know it sucks

Favorite games overall:

1. Zero 3
2. X3
3. Rest of the Zero series
4. MM10, MM3, MM4
5. X1-X2

That's not to say that I think that all of the other games are crappy. I really didn't feel like creating a full list, so I just settled on my top five ten.

There are many ridiculously awesome themes in the series over all, but here are just a few of my favorite themes, in no particular order:

Abandoned Memory - MM10 (tied for best final stage theme in the classic series, IMO)
No Turning Back - MM10 (tied for best final stage theme in the classic series, IMO)
Flash In The Dark - MM9
Gate's Laboratory X6
Sigma Stage 1 - X
Sigma Stage 1 - X2
Sigma Stage - X5
Opening Stage - X3
Opening Stage - X2
King Stage (GBA) - MM&B
Craft's Stage - Zero 4
Boss Battle - Zero 4

Heh, most of those are either final or first stage themes...

This thread = <3 <3 <3

It's so funny. I used to think Mega Man was a retarded blue cash cow. And it is a cash cow, but it's a delicious, fun, beautiful cash cow, and they can milk it for as long as they want, as long as the results don't sour. Fantastic music, awesome character designs, cool stories... yeaaah. There's some awesome fanfiction out their, too, for the anime series starved masses. (GIMME MAH X ANIME SERIES NAO.) Of course theirs tons of disgusting crap too, but I don't like to think about that too much... I just really appreciate how visually thought out the series is. (X8 and the Zero series demonstrate this well.)

I really enjoyed Legends, X8, and the Zero series. The other X games are cool and I acknowledge their awesome, but I don't like the feel of the controls as much. I'm too much of a noob for the Classic series, but I appreciate it as well. (Especially the manga! YEAAHRR.)

I'm playing Zero 3 right now, and I've gotten to the point where, after a few tries, I can usually power through a level fast enough to get a top grade in speed. :awesome: There's just so many cool armors and weapons! And the cyber elves add a WHOLE other dimension of customization. The bosses ALWAYS look awesome, and the Four Guardians are some of my favorite characters. (Particularly Harpuia, but I heart them all.)

It's almost impossible for me to pick favorites, but here are some of the bosses I like:

Image Image
Image

Volteel Biblio, Sol Titanion, and Noble Mandrago.

Sol's background is interesting- according to the Official Complete Works, she managed an artificial sun with an identical unit. But then Weil came and killed her partner, and she went totally insane. I might have to write about that.

What does she think Metroid is? A porno? Does she know it's Alien with Crayola crayons?

BTW Burner Man's stage was pretty gay if only for those huge cylinders that light everything on fire.

AHG.

So, instead of doing my finals due tomorrow, I played through the entirety of Mega Man 4. Man, what a great game. Loved Pharaoh Man's stage, along with Ring Man's and Skull Man's. They're just pure fun. Same with the Cossack/Wily stages.

To tell the truth, I often flip back and forth on my favorite Robot Master. It's usually up between Air Man and Pharaoh Man. The former for best music, and the other for just sheer cool factor. the Pharaoh Man is Awesome video certainly helps.

Somehow, this video hasn't been mentioned yet.

Also, does anyone here still have nightmares over Quickman's stage? With the lasers? That thing was hard.

Somehow, the version in I Wanna Be The Guy was EASIER.

As for my favorite Robot Master, I liked Cut Man a lot.
Suckers.

Ah, Quick Man's stage... Yep, although I think MM2 is much easier overall than most of the other games, even on hard, Quick Man's stage is still amongst those I find hardest. Then X5's stupid-ass had to bring'em back, except faster, although for a much shorter period of time. Thank goodness they could be stopped in both games. Too bad, though, that in MM2, the weapon used to stop those lasers is the boss' weakness and I don't think here was much, if not no, weapon energy laying around...

Going back to the subject of Pharaoh Man:

Edit:

By the way, MM6 and X5 have the best boss intros out of the entire series. I couldn't find one for MM6, so I'm only posting the one for X5:

Too bad X5 ruined those intros by giving the Mavericks some of the stupidest names this way to Sunday. Yeah yeah, we get it, you like Guns n' Roses, but that doesn't make Dark Dizzy sound any less retarded.

Quick Man's stage is tricky the first few times, but by now, it's not really anything too challenging. A few slip ups here and there, but MM2 remains a pretty damned easy game. Most of the classic series is, plus X1 (which is laughably easy).

The only MM games I think are at all hard are MM3's Doc Robot stages, MM4, and Mega Man and Bass (and that's more because of cheap level design than actual difficulty).

Honorable mention does go to MM7's Wily Capsule for being the most frustratingly difficult Mega Man boss. Ever.

Sheesh what a fucking ass-pain he was.

And I love all that Air Man can't be Defeated stuff.
He's got to be one of the most easiest RMs to beat, along with Toad Man and Metal Man. In fact, the first time I played 2 I picked Air Man first just because I knew just how much of a joke that whole Air Man can't be Defeated was.

Ditto everything said about Airman (and the classic series in general), MM&B, and Wily Capsule 7. Especially Wily Capsule 7. Goddamn, Capcom, what the hell were you thinking?

Speaking of 7, I love them for this:

Oh, and, aside from Metal Shark Player's stage in X6 on Xtreme Mode, especially if the stage doesn't load the correct way and the Nightmare system decides to fuck with you, I found MM10's Hard Mode to be the hardest thing I've ever played through in any of the Mega Man games, including the X and Zero series.

As Proto Man. Mega Man still has somewhat of a rough time and HM was that close to being something resembling a Normal Mode for the game breaking Bass, but Proto Man is taking 4x regular damage and the stage designs become very unforgiving.

Also, I just remembered how much I hate Plant Man's stage in MM6. It should've been really easy, but something always found a way to fuck me up the ass.

Yeah, I never got the whole getting-stuck-at-Airman.

I mean, seriously, Airman? You can literally just walk up to him and blast him to bits without dying, his tornadoes do so little damage.

Still, the song is catchy.
Suckers.

One of these days I really have to beat the Zero Collection.

I got 2/3 through Z3, but I just couldn't shake the feeling that "Man, the first 2 Zero games were cooler"

Well, I should rephrase that. The second Zero game was pretty damned awesome, and easily my fav. The first was pretty cool, but for the most part, just ok. The game punished you for making simple mistakes on a regular basis.

So did Zero 2, but at the least it had great gameplay, levels, and music to make up for it.

I guess I ain't givin' it a chance or something.

Also I never played the ZX series for the DS, mainly because of money and a pal of mine told me that I'd beat them once, and pretty much never play them again.
Plus, dat voice acting... yuck. I like bad (see: Resident Evil), but really.

Though I like some of the music.

Yeah, despite the voice. I recommend them ,, both ZX1 and 2, they are very good. Plus, they give some *wink* to the people who played the megaman X series :AH: ( maybe there is more reference, I only played X 1,2,3 ) .

I must be a pretty big nerd, because there's times where I just go through the whole day listening to Mega Man music.

Hell for the last 4 or so days I've been listening to pretty much nothing but the Zero 4 remastered music, as well as the Mega Man ZX Gigamix tracks.

It's what one of my pals calls "lapses in taste" - when we listen to music we know is not all THAT great but we love it anyway.

One's taste in anything is subjective. That you like it is all that really matters.

I could sit here linking Mega Man music 'till me fingers bleed, but I'll skip the medical bills and simply link the remixes I've fallen in love with over the years.

The Passing of the Blue Crown:

At present my favorite Mega Man remix. I've been listening to it nonstop for days, which can't be good for my ears. Guess I'll have them bleeding before my fingers.

LetThereBeLight

A much more dark, almost forboding Meag Man mix. Much more atmosphereic than most. A :cookie: to anyone who can successfully guess the source track WITHOUT reading the mix writup.

Good Night Lil Man

Pianos and melancholy! Not quite what one would expect from a Mega Man remix, but it just goes to show how versitle the source material can be.

Beamsabre Beat ZEROv2

This one stood as my favorite for quite a while untill Sixto whipped up "The Passing of the Blue Crown" up top. An excellent mashup of Zero's themes from the first 3 X games and the best non-official Zero theme remix I've yet heard.

I'm stopping it here before I flood the board with awesome music. If you haven't figured it out yet, I love OCR, not exclusively, but they're collectively some of the most talented musicians on the remix scene today. Check'em out, you're boound to find something to suit your tastes.

And now for something completely different...

FOR THE LOVE OF INAFUNE, PLAY THROUGH ZERO 3&4!!!

You telling me that you'll sit there listening to all that awesome music without having propperly finished Z3 or Z4!? Blasphemy! You deprive yourself of a GRAND experiance! The Zero Collection's been out for a while and should be dirt cheap by now, so go frakin' buy it already! Pick up ZX and ZXAdvent while you're at it, they're a blast to play and you can get just as much replayability out of'em as any other Mega Man title.

lol dude, I'm a member of Overclocked Remix. The forum, anyway. Haven't been there in a week though since I got involved in a project and I've made zero progress and I'm embarrassed but that's besides the point.

And I HAVE the Zero Collection, and I beat Zero 3 this morning.

You know, I wonder, why is it for these games being so hard, all of their last bosses are so laughably easy?

I beat Omega on my first try, without dying once. Had to use ONE elf to heal me, but hey that's what you have to do. Charged-Saber really fucks over EVERYTHING in the Zero series.

I mean, Copy X in Z1 was a pushover, and Elpizo wasn't really all that difficult in Z2.

I can only imagine Weil in Z4 will be roughly the same.
Who, by the way, consistently disappoints me with how shitty of a bad-guy he is. Sometimes I wonder if everyone in the MM universe suffers from a severe case of retard.

Oh, here's this human who started the elf wars and is a mad scientist we finally caught him! What should we do?
I know! Let's give him immortality, and banish him from our presence so he can totally build up his power outside of our watch!

Great idea!
