The end of Nintendo....Power.

Postby VGMStudios » 08.22.12 7:41am

That's right. Looks like NP is no more.

As I wrote on another board:

this tears it. I am getting rather sick of Nintendo these day and their tactics. What is happening to this once great company. Im finding it really hard to be a nintendo fan these days from all the crap they are doing. I knew this day would come eventually since the day Future started to publish the mag. Its gone down hill ever since. So will it go to the end of the cycle or are we going to get refunded? Kinda hilarious that they are shutting down so close to the Wii U launch.

To reply, a lot of people. Not everyone used the net exclusively for there info. Print is still a big part of getting information.
Not only that NP is the longest running gaming magazine. That should count for something.

Magazines are a dying breed these days. The likes of PC Gamer can survive because they're actually a global brand (and you would suppose that a PC gaming magazine would be among the first against the chopping block. Internet and all), but unless you have a really wide circulation across several countries you'll always be at risk.

Man, I still remember the oddly profound sadness I felt when Super Play ceased circulation. That was an awesome magazine. At least they knew they were coming to the end, it's sister magazine Total! died without warning not long afterwards even though it could have still carried on with N64 content unlike SPlay.

Not surprising but sad news none the less. Though, I canceled my subscription long ago I did have one spanning the entire decade of the 90s to which I have fond memories of. They use to have some of the best in depth previews and premium players guide quality walkthroughs. There was also all the extra stuff, like the posters and comics! I still remember ripping out all the Super Metroid comics as a kid and stapling them all together to make my own makeshift comic-book trade paperback. Ah, memories!

Oh, and who could forget those awesome, yet hilarious, promotional VHS tapes they always send out? Especially this one for Star Fox 64:

In a world where centuries old newspapers are going belly up and you can get most info online minutes after it happens, you find this surprising?

It's sad, yes, but as Nintendo isnt the publisher, how is it their fault?

You read the article, right? it says it is Nintendo's fault as they were being very difficult to work with.
Besides there are still lots of ppl who don't have net access. Anyways that's besides the point.
This just adds to my anger for big n. They are doing a lot of things something Sony would pull.
I know no one here is a collector, but there are lots of ppl who collect these thing as they have value to them being whatever that value may be.

But whatever no one seems to care. the mag will be missed.

Oh, I'm sorry, I assumed since I read two articles yesterday when this was announced that I'd seen it all. Your response was appreciated though, I am clearly an idiot and will learn from my mistakes in the future.

Despite the fact that the age of gaming magazines is clearly reaching an end, it's sad to see Nintendo Power in particular going. It was the first of its kind and we certainly owe a lot to it, since it was what first established a gaming community. It had its run, and it was a good one. We'll always play with power.

It's certainly a terrible time to cease publication. I doubt relations with Nintendo were the only reason of its end.

Well, Naner, to be fair, there were Commodore and arcade-centric mags before Nintendo Power.

But Nintendo Power was definitely a marvel to behold back in the day.

It is sad to see another print magazine, especially with the name of Nintendo, go the way of the dodo.
Print magazines to me have always maintained somewhat of a higher standard of gaming journalism quality than the shit-tastic sites like Gamespot and IGN.

Read any early issue of GameFan and you'll see gaming journalism has sunk a long way down.

There is something to be said about a good gaming magazine (like Arcadia back in the day) that you will never get from an online news site, which sucks the cocks of as many publishers as possible to get ad space ruining their journalistic integrity.

Nintendo Power was always a pretty heavily-skewed magazine (esp. in the brief frame of time I was subscribed to it back in the N64 days), but it was always an incredibly exciting experience to wait for the magazine to come and find out first about new games and more from their articles.

I don't like that it's going either, and I dislike a lot of gaming blogs, but I definitely saw this coming. I'm surprised GameInformer and all the other mags are still kicking.

I didn't want to fight. But when I'm being non-argumentative, and get a dick response along the lines of "Did you even READ the article" (which I just noticed you edited after my response?), it doesn't make me want to play nice.

I'm a reactive person, not a malicious person.
