Seriously, how awesome is this? Totally from left field, but wholly welcome. The continue mechanic sounds awesome, as if it will totally increase the tension.

In fact, the aliens can completely defeat you. In a bold move, WayForward has created a game that can be lost if you don't play well. That's "lost" as in "total game over." The player can control a squad of up to 19 marines, and if one is lost, he or she is gone forever. When all 19 are gone, there are no more continues.

Losing to a xenomorph isn't always instant death, mind you; sometimes your current marine will be captured and cocooned, but they can be rescued by comrades. Some captured humans will be selected as hosts for facehuggers, though, and at that point that marine is effectively dead (even if it's a matter of time before they realize it).

Conventional game design wisdom says "don't alienate gamers by making games tough," but difficulty seems to be a basic selling point of Infestation. Few modern games exact a strong penalty for failure, but it's possible to bungle Infestation so badly that you simply can't win. This is hardly a new idea, but it's definitely unusual to see it integrated into such a large, open-ended adventure.

I'm not much of an alien fan (I've seen the first movie, that's about it) but I might check this game out the metroid-esque gameplay seems awesome. :o I hope the story and plot is as big as they're claiming it to be.

Just a heads-up. Gamestop has this game listed for release on September 6, contrary to 1ups October release date. Though it's unlikely to be a huge hit, this game is very high on my must-play list, so anyone aching for a solid Metroidvania adventure may have less to wait than we thought!

Interesting I hope for new gameplay info soon. I'm loving the large scale maps and the fact this game is in 2D means they have a lot of cartridge space to work with so I expect the game to give me a lot of play time. I wonder if you can travel back and forth between levels after you've completed them.

This sounds more like a Zelda lock-and-key mechanic than a Metroidvania. If I read the description correctly and if it was accurate, the items you get while exploring simply open new pathways and don't actually affect your movement abilities or combat abilities.

I can't wait for this, I loved Alien 3 for Genesis. But this doesn't sound anything like it (I don't really care.)
