1986 Metroid Manga

Postby Will Keaton » 03.12.09 4:48pm

So this new Metroid Manga has been up on the main page for a few days now and no one's mentioned it, so I thought I may as well get the Maru Mari rolling.

Made back in 1986 and released as a manga based on the original Metroid this piece of work actually doubles as a players guide. No really.

At close to 200 pages there is a lot to go though but here are a few highlights:

Page 9 Samus is so sexy even the ladies want her. Although at this point in time I guess everyone still thought she was a guy so this probably isn't so unusual.

Page 17 Apparently Unicron ate planet Zebes when no one was looking.

Page 18 Samus Aran. The Galaxy's greatest bounty hunter; and worst volleyball player.

Page 21 Apparently she's not so good at The Legend of Zelda either. Or maybe she just likes to watch Link get beat up.

Pages 24 & 25 While the ship she uses in this manga looks nothing like any of her traditional ships it is interesting to note that it still has the signature roof hatch elevator we all know and love.

Page 29 Geemer. The Pointy-Things-Sticking-Out-Of-It's-Hard-Shell Pokemon. This Pokemon is known to crawl around the perimiter of a given room for years at a time without ever stopping to eat, sleep or poop. Also, this Pokemon is not actually a Pokemon.

Page 49 Samus, you spend too much time playing Nintendo games. I swear girl it's gonna get you killed one of these days. This is Metroid, NOT super Mario Bros. The same rules do not apply to every game. For instance, if you see a fat guy with boxing gloves and a burger king hat, don't try to defeat him by making him drop his pants. Just shoot him in the face with a missile.

Page 51 You got the missile! Now you can run around like a character from Castle Crashers firing heavy ordinance in random directions with wild abandon!

Page 111 "Stop! Who would use the elevator of Death must answer us these questions, er, three. Yeah. So that doesn't rhyme so good when there are two of us. Now if it was just me I could have said 'me' instead of 'us' and it wouldn't have thrown off the rhyming pattern. Hey Bob. Scram. Then I can do this riddle thing without screwing up the- hey! Where's that chick in the armour go!? Dammit Bob! This is all your fault!"

Page 130s & 131 "I am Ridley. Fear me and my ability to shoot fireballs in several different directions at the same time by jumping up and down!"

Page 133 "Oh God No! Not my heart! I need that! It is the organ that pumps my evil, evil blood throughout my vile, sinister body providing my cells with diabloical oxygen and malevolent nutrients so that I may continue to live my unkind and antagonistic life in a fashion that is, um, not nice."

Page 135 "Remember kids. If you can't kill an evil space dragon by shooting it in the chest it's always a good idea to leap into the pool of molten lava below him and fire a powerful laser beam up his anus."

Page 139 "Okay. Now that I've managed to ditch Bob let's try this again. Ahem. Who would use the elevator of Death must answer me these questions three. Er the bottom of the shaft they see. Question 1! Uhm... Oh crap. I forget what the first question was. Hold on a minute. I know I wrote it down here somewhere... Ah here it is! Now then. Hey. Where'd you go? Dammit, she's gone again. I blame you Bob. I don't know how yet but I'm sure this is all your fault. Somehow.

Pages 154 & 155 "I am the mighty Kraid. Fear my incredibly thick back hair that would make even Robin Williams curl up into a ball and weep tears of impotence."

Page 160 "No! I'm too young to get exploded! There's so much I haven't done with my life yet! Like, uh. Hmm. Actually I can't think of anything. Oh well, never mind then. Ahem. Blargh, I am dead."

Pages 166 & 167 "Oh no! The upper bodies of Ridley and Kraid have returned from beyond the grave seeking vengence upon my immortal soul! Oh. No wait. They're just PEZ dispensers. Nevermind."

Page 169 "Oh look! A Metroid. It's Sooo cute! I just wanna give him a great big OHGODOHGODOHGODITSLATCHEDONTOMYSKULLGETITOFFGETITOFFGETITOFF!"

Pages 178 & 179 "I am the Mother Brain! Puny human! You will die before my mighty tusks and my biopic vision! Two physical traits that I will never exhibit in any future games!"

Page 187
GREAT !!
YOU FULFILED YOUR MISSION.
IT WILL REVIVE PEACE IN SPACE.
BUT, IT MAY BE INVADED BY THE OTHER METROID.
PRAY FOR A TRUE PEACE IN SPACE !

"The Hell? What is that supposed to mean? Did the narrator get drunk again? Seriously, we live in the distant future and we still can't get a decent Japanese to English translation? What's up with that?"

I love this.

Unconditionally.

It's rare we get to see the Metroid world in this kind of form, not taking itself so darn seriously. XD I may have to color a few of those...

Well, let's see. There's this guy from the 1986 manga, Hardy, chief of Federation Obese from the super metroid comic and Chief Hardy from the Zero Mission manga. Man that guy sure gets around for somebody who doesn't even exist in the actual games. Fella doesn't even get so much as passing reference in some really obscure scan in a Prime game, but in the comics and manga? You couldn't swing an Ing possesed cat without hitting the guy, (and likley makng him spill his space coffee on his space pants, forcing him to have them taken to the space dry-cleaner.) And then people wonder why the Metroid universe is always teetering on the brink of total annhiliation. Forget metroids and X-parasites, your problem is that this guy is in charge of the military.

So. Is that Chief Hardy? Survey says: Sure! Why not!?

He wasn't that bad in the prequel manga, he just seemed to have a problem with his blood temperature.

Also, this manga/guide/whatever seems to have a really early version of the space pirates: http://mdb.classicgaming.gamespy.com/re ... rt1&i=4&s=

Can one of our Japanese speaking users provide us a quick answer on this? It would be very interresting to find that the character originated in Japan almost a decade earlier.

Im glad you guys are enjoying my hard work. ;)
I really was really surprised to see Samus surrounded by those women as well. I guess no one knew she was a woman herself.
Over all I really enjoyed working on it and some of the art work is fantastic. I was tempted to color a few myself while working on them.

Oh PS: Thank you for the credit on the first page. I was giddy to see my nick there, but my nick name is ONE word. On the front page its split in two.

VGM out...

I can't even read Japanese, but I really liked the Manga, and it is my FAVORITE Metroid Manga, for these reasons:

1. It's really funny. The pictures were so funny that I kept on reading till the end.
2. I like it's depiction of common Metroid elements: Metroids, the Power Suit, Kraid, Ridley, Mother Brain, etc.
3. It displayed Game mechanics very well in my opinion.

And finally: it's AWESOME!
