Overblast and Lethal Strike opportunities (Big Spoilers!)

Postby Zeroº » 08.31.10 11:43pm

Thought I'd open a topic to let people chime in on how and when to use Overblast and Lethal Strike on the various biological oddities of the Bottle Ship. Some enemies seem like they just can't be Overblasted, but it really just takes a bit of opportunity, so let's share what we have found.

Brug Mass (Purple Bug Monster, first boss): Instead of shooting him in the eye from a distance, you can charge up your beam and jump onto his main body. Samus will run up it and shoot it in the eye, just like in the trailers.

Groganch (Quadraxis-like Tree-Bird Thingy that has a giant green orb on its belly): When it flips over and the green orb is on its back, stay near its feet. It will fire a barrage of purple poison bombs, then drop down onto you; but before it drops down, it will dip a little bit. Use this cue to Sense move away. Once it drops, quickly run back to it and jump on top of it to Overblast the orb.

Rhedogian (Persistent Anomalocaris-like Thing first fought on the long elevator ride): Its eye will turn red when it charges its death ray, that's the chance to hit it with a missile to stun it. At that point, just run up to it with a full charge.

Griptian (Armadillo lizards): Drop Bombs in Morph Ball mode as they roll around to stun them, then run up to them to Lethal Strike 'em.

Gigafraug (Sheegoth-like Two-Legged Ramming Thing found in Sector 2): Hit its head with a missile to break its bony crest, then jump on it with a full charge to Overblast it.

Keyhunter: Jump towards it with a fully charged shot to it knock to the ground and rip its wings off. Approach the now wingless Keyhunter with a fully-charged shot to initiate a Lethal Strike.

Dessgeega: Jump onto it with a fully-charged shot to Overblast it. Usually helpful to hit it with a charged blast first to freeze it in place.

Sidehopper: Jump onto it with a fully charged shot to Overblast it. Helpful to hit it with a charged blast to freeze it place, but that could kill it.

X-45G(similar to Sidehoppers and Dessgeegas): Jump onto it with a fully-charged shot to Overblast it. Usually helpful to hit it with a charged blast first to freeze it in place.

Zebesian Space Pirate: Jump onto it with a fully-charged blast to Overblast it. Some of the stronger ones are likely to toss you off, though. If you hit it with a fully-charged shot while it is in mid jump, it is likely to fall to the ground stunned; run up to it then with a fully-charged shot to administer a Lethal Strike.

Phantoon: Once he's taken enough damage, he will drop his eye down on the floor of the bridge. Take this opportunity to perform a Lethal Strike on him, by approaching said eye. You can also Lethal Strike his little hands if you hit them enough times to knock them to the ground.

Ridley: After he's taken a few hits, he is likely to drop to the ground and look winded. Use this opportunity to quickly execute an Overblast to his head.

I just laid into him with missiles while he was stunned; not wanting to go anywhere near him.

I'll be sure to remembuh this tip the next time I fight that bastard.

Great topic!

The only ones I can think off off the top of my head are for the keyhunter Zebesians. Jump on the back of a flying one and Samus will tear its wings off. When it's wingless, simply approach it and Samus will grab it, spin it around and slam it into the ground for the kill.

Not a Lethal Strike or an Overblast, but here's a tip for taking down some enemies later in the game:
Once you have all the beams, a lot of the seemingly tough enemies will go down in anywhere from 8 to 15 regular shots. Thanks to auto-aim and a really quick fire rate, this is often much faster than hitting them with several charged shots. Especially if they dodge a lot.

Has anybody found a way to Overblast or Lethal Strike the Grapple Point-Eating Lava Monster or either phase of Nightmare? They both leave themselves wide open for one, but I've yet to pull anything off.

The Grapple Point Eater seems like the type that you could get swallowed by to lay some bombs; and it also seems like you should be able to do something to it after you fish it out of the lava.

As for Nightmare; I'm thinking you should be able to do something to him after he charges at you, but I've never been able to manage anything.

If anybody has found anything out about those two, or is willing to experiment with them, please let us know what your findings are. :)

You can Lethal Strike nearly every non-boss enemy while they recoil from a Charge Shot no matter what state they're in. It's a pretty short window of opportunity, though.

Has anyone managed to pull off the kick to the face on the Space Pirates?

Thanks. So I'm guessing its the same deal with grabbing the chameleons by the tail and throwing them?

Yeah, I was surprised to see that, having never done it before since getting anywhere near that thing seemed like such a terrible idea.

I really want to overblast nightmare. You know, shove my arm canon right into it's slimy baby crying face.

It just goes to show that children are nightmares.

You're the second person I've seen to compare Nightmare to a baby. I just don't see (or hear) it; is it the pouting/sagging mouth? The cry? Because every alien ever shrieked something like that, and the mouth looks more like a bad Botox job than a baby's to me.

Its cries sound like a baby's crying distorted straight into nightmare fuel for me.
Thank you infinitys End for the avvy
(I never put Infinity Ward here. You don't know what you're talking about)

Now, I just need to check my e-mail more often, so I notice these things
