The Making of Super Metroid

Postby Sorcerio » 09.03.10 11:37pm

I found this interesting article on nowgamer.com which has Sakamoto musing back to the development days of Super Metroid.

“We really didn’t want to explain things to the player using too many words,” Sakamoto states.
“We just wanted to let them play and be able to work things out for themselves."

That's a really interesting interview, thanks for finding it.

Cool insights on Yokoi; some interesting stuff there.

Sorry for my irkedness, but for fuck's sake people, this is the exact same Retro Gamer article, copied verbatim, which we've had on the site since last year!!!

Do you people seriously just not give 2 shits about the content on our site? x_x Sometimes I wonder why I still even try.

I'm assuming that you are directing this towards me since I posted it. This article was dated 8/31/10 and I had't seen the original posting of the scanned content before. Nor could I get any search results using "unique to this article" strings of text.

If the Administration of this site can't bother with being polite, let alone abstain from slinging profanities towards its users, then I really don't feel this is my kind of place. Please kindly delete my posts and remove my account.

Actually it wasn't directed at you at all. It was more towards the MDb vets that should have already read the article. ;) The article was posted on 8/31, but it was over a year that it was published in print so I guess they felt it was okay to do so on the net.

Ok. I gotcha. Still it seemed harsh to me. I very much appreciate the need to keep this site's quality and integrity at a high level. Maybe we could OCR the scanned articles and make the text searchable. I felt pretty happy to find something to contribute that didn't come up in the search; however, I wouldn't have posted redundant information had I known it already existed somewhere on the site.

I don't really want to leave. I like the active forums and lively people here, but I don't want to feel like I'm in a police-state where people (in general) are walking on eggshells for fear of a biting remark or seething reprimand for disrupting some delicate balance. It's just not a good vibe, you know?

Not everybody can catch everything that comes up on the site. There's just so much! And when it comes down to it, we're all just people (albeit Metroid freaks!) here trying to have some good fun times, right?

I see your point, but it's definitely not like that. The other regulars know -- it's mostly an inside joke -- I always go off when I notice when they don't read the main site and just use our forum. Even though we have an MDb Headline feed that summarizes when we add content. People never go to the front page! They've admitted to it, too. People even come into the forum, asking where to find content that's obviously on the MDb. Just kinda frustrating I guess... >_<

While we're on the subject, there's a LOT more information about the game's development in this interviewI translated. The funny thing is, we would have been able to break most of the information that was in the other article PLUS more if I'd gotten a copy of this sooner. I honestly believe there is a LOT of interesting information that is out there in Japanese that we don't know about because the people who have the sources don't scan them.
