I poked around that forum for a minute to see if I could find any other crackpots like me who are obsessed with Melissa.

I couldn't. Forum's not worth the time it takes to load.

In other news, I now solidify my rating at somewhere between 5 and 8 and out 10.

!Ok, for the record: do NOT take the following overly seriously, or to mean I am angry or upset . . . I'm being a smart@$$, and should be viewed as such!

Yeah, ok. Whatever. You're TOTALLY right, this place is, like, the WEAKEST of all Metroid forums. Sorry for doubting you. Hardcore? Pfft, more like LAMEcore, M I RITE? :D

Note: this was a JOKE. Much like the majority of my last post. Figured that translated, seeing as how my brain isn't ACTUALLY damaged in any way (that I know of), but . . . well, I suppose I was wrong.

And as for "screaming fanwank" . . . THIS is a good example.

I have no problem with opinion. I ESPECIALLY have no problem with well-thought-out opinion (which this guy HAS, more or less). I even have no problem with negative opinion. I have a problem with negative opinion that you feel the need to beat like a dead horse for the maximum character count of 6 posts, and when people disagree at all, you berate and dismiss them and tell them they're all just wrong because they don't think about their opinions, and anyone who disagrees is just stupid, for 42 FRIGGIN' PAGES.

That, good sir, is screaming fanwank.

As for the other forum, no, varied reviews doesn't equal fanwank. I was making a joke. But again, it appears that just didn't translate, what with the over-the-top imagery and the "have a heart" comment. I guess it was just too subtle. -_-;

so basically what's going on is you're trying to combat something that isn't even going on here

how come the people with the "positive opinions" are the ones that keep bringing the people with the "negative opinions" up and "beating the dead horse"

does no one else see the irony here

9/10

Just finished the game with 72% in 17:52 O_O

I really enjoyed this game and rank it as one of my best gaming experiences ever :awesome:

Obligatory review follows....

Graphics = 9 out of 10 (best graphics on the Wii)
Sound (music) = 8 out of 10 (I know people have commented on the lack of in-game music but I though it suited the game well - I am perhaps a bit spoilt as my Wii is hooked up to a 400W A/V receiver running a 7.1 speaker system ;) )
Sound (effects) = 9 out of 10 (really added atmosphere to the game - best use in a Wii game I have heard so far)
Gameplay = 10 out of 10 (I really hope they use this game engine again)
Story = 6 out of 10 (not the strongest point of the game but what do people expect from Japanese writers? I've read enough manga and watched enough anime to know that story lines in Japanese 'drama' rarely makes sense to us westerners)
Value = 9 out of 10 (almost 18 hours of entertainment for £37, plus I still have the epilog to complete and I'm sure I'll have at least two more replays - a lot cheaper than a hooker and no risk of nasty diseases O_O )

I'm actually seeing the line as this: 2D Metroid fans seem to like it, while people who ONLY like/played the Prime games seem to have major problems with it. Why?

2D Metroid Fans:
 • Are not shocked by a linear Metroid, because they probably already played Fusion (and possibly M2, as well).
 • Are not strangers to D-pads and can beat a game just fine with them.
 • Generally don't give a crap about moving in first-person (if anything, I think they should have ditched first-person entirely and just used the "-" button to cycle weapons).
 • Most importantly, they appreciate Other M for its PACING. The one thing I really hated about the Primes is that they are slow as effing molasses compared to the 2D games. Other M brought that fast pacing back.

In contrast, I think anyone who is primarily a Prime fan has too many adjustments to deal with at once... No analog controls and gimped first-person view is bad enough; throw in the fact that this is probably their first linear Metroid and the nerdrage shouldn't be a surprise. Note that in the G4 "talkback" episode, more than once they mentioned how "excellent" the Prime games were. The Primes were probably the last three Metroid games they played.

Of course, there are people who hate it for its story, too, but I think it's universally agreed that the story and storytelling are below par (even the good reviews mentioned this). I guess anyone who likes the game HAS to look past the story XD

Opium wrote:Since this seems to be the poorest rated game since Hunters and definitely the poorest rated console game in the series, I'm hoping that they won't continue in this direction. That is how they responded to Hunters - they never looked back and kinda pretended that it didn't happen.

It depends. I DO want them to continue making 3rd-person 3D Metroids like this, and I think it's very possible... From market standpoint, Other M mimics Fusion in a lot of ways (linear, no sequence breaks, story-based, etc.), and when Fusion got its flak for it, we ended up getting Zero Mission; almost as an apology. It'd be great if they did the same, here, and followed up with a more traditional-style Metroid that uses the same 3D viewpoint (and throws away the storytelling elements).

But another game using Other M's exact formula? I'd buy it, but its announcement would get a "meh" from me.

Well I definitely prefer the 2D games and consider the primes, although awesome, to be kind of an offshoot from the rest of the series. I've actually been talking for years about how I wish they made a game like prime or super except in 3rd person. I had hoped that was what we would get with other m. I havent even tried very hard to make sense of the story, or samus' personality, because I'm not interested and the fact that its all skippable after the first playthrough means that I really dont have to be interested either. I enjoyed the graphics and thought the game looked great. So,

Likes:
-graphics
-later bosses
-alternate ending

Neutral:
-story
-samus' personality
-linearity (hell, I LOVE fusion)

Dislikes:
-slow over-the-shoulder view parts where you're basically forced to walk around to interact with the story, not play
-pixel-hunting parts
-auto-firing (they could have made the targeting like prime. that style doesnt have to be 1st person)
-combat system
-3rd-to-1st person view switch in order to fire a missile.
-Oh, I almost forgot
how silly it is to simply look at MB during the final fight.
The dislikes list is not that much bigger than the likes list, but the items on it are pretty important. Important enough for me to really be disappointed in this game. I just think they were bad decisions.

Yeah, you and me both. I'm hoping that Nintendo's response to Other M's controversy will be to give us a "normal" Metroid game in 3rd-person, but we'll see I guess.

Hell, I pretty much agree with your entire post and I think that's a more rational summary than most of the negative reviews have done. I did like the combat system though, despite its simplicity... Though that may just be because I was excited to finally play a FAST Metroid game again hahaha.

BTW, is it just me or is the auto-targeting far less forgiving in hard mode? In normal, it seemed like I could get through a room without even touching the D-pad, but in hard it feels like I actually need to point at things to hit them.

I give it an 8. It's definately not as excellent as the rest of the series(then again, I've never played Hunters, make of that of what you will), and it has a laughable story and voice acting, and it's WAY too linear(damnit Adam, quit yer authorizing and railroading!), but it has strong gameplay and combat, and I can definately see Team Ninja's influence in the satisfyingly hard difficulty level. I'll still prefer Super and the Prime games of course, but it's still a pretty good game. Although I still can't forgive the completely awful "no Varia" run in the Pyrosphere...

This is a 9.5 to me but i gave it a 10, i enjoyed every aspect in the game, the great combat system, the fast 2D Metroid paced action feel, the art direction in this game is superb, the atmosphere is suited very well with the ambience sounds, the incredibles graphics, the depictions in 3D for the old bosses (the boss fights were jaw-dropping!!), and cut-scenes and story were a risky addition for a series beacuse there were an awful lot of depictions of Samus thoughts and feelings, the cut-scenes could have gone very wrong, Yet Sakamoto-san and Kitaura-san have pulled them off very well indeed  ( i enjoyed the story a lot, i almost cried with it).....

This is my favorite Metroid game after Super Metroid! :awesome:

5/10 personally, a 7, maybe am 8 at a stretch as far as mass-audience appeal is concerned.

I give it a 9 out of 10. I unlike others did enjoy the game from the beginning to the end aside from the 100% complimentation though and thus it became became my favorite metroid game. I would love to see nintendo come up with another Metroid game with the same engine of Other M but with a few improvements cause I admit that they could have put more thoughts in the game but overall it's still a great game to my opinion.

After fully playing the game, I changed my answer from 8 to 10.

To hell with all the haters. This game was amazing to me.

And the story was not cheesy, it fit perfectly in the Metroid timeline and pieced shit together easier than us finding out for ourselves.

Thank you Team Ninja, Nintendo and Sakamoto or however you spell it.
