I finally downloaded and tried this hack out today... I got so distracted by the pretty that I ended up beating the game again, LOL. Very nice work on those sprites! The character art was the only major knock I ever had on the game, and it's nice to finally play Metroid with that problem fixed. The suitless sprite in particular looks amazing, and those run cycles are golden. This hack + that Lua script is officially my preferred way to play this game, now Thanks for all your hard work!

Hey mowan, thanks a lot! It's really great to hear when people give my hack a try -- I worked very long on it. I am glad it's not going unnoticed. It especially gives me great pleasure to hear when it gives people a newer, better outlook on the original game. I know I gained a much greater respect for it after working on that hack.

Just beat the MBDtroid hack.
The sprites looks really good and it was a blast to play especially with the lua.script.
I started this night and beat all of Metroid 1 in 1:39, with 88% items. It was pretty fun. Died once, at the Ridley fight.
The only thing not too cool about the hack was said ridley fight.
In the original, Ridley is a total dingus mcgee. He stands one block higher than you, and shoots all of his fireballs in an arc way over you, so you can just fuck him over point-blank with missiles.
In the hack, he's on this high pillar pot-shotting you and there's pretty much nothing you can do about it. Oh, and the door to his room is a ten missile door. If you get knocked out, GUESS WHAT YOU HAVE TO OPEN AGAIN.
ARRGGHH So yeah, his fight was a surprising amount of pain I was NOT prepared for!!!!
Still like I said, I had a lot of fun with this, and everything looks beautiful. Do you have a copy of some of those sprites you made? I wanna show them off to other folks on other forums. Preferably Ridley and Mother Brain (the latter looks AWESOME).

Glad you finally played/enjoyed the hack dude! It also gives me great pleasure to hear that new Ridley is such a challenge to beat. (I upped his Hitpoints considerably too) I'm not going to release the sprites publicly. If people want the sprites they'll have to play it themselves. It gives people less incentive to play if they can just look at the new sprites, y'know?

I support this decision. Young-uns nowadays have no idea how much just being able to see final bosses or endings contributed to a desire to complete a game. Oh Ganon in Zelda 1, just what the hell do you look like?!On a related note...

He is certainly more challenging, although I would say the hitpoint change introduces a bit more tedium, as well. But I view that as a nitpick, since I realize you had very little to work with at the outset; the bosses in the original were pretty much a joke... So any change is an improvement! I think the other other nitpick I had was the randomization you (seem to have) added to the red button thingies that shoot balls... It feels like it just ends up being cheap hits. But maybe I haven't figured out the strategy to those, yet? Are you an artist by trade? I'm still really surprised by how good your sprites turned out; they're 10x better than what comprise the typical fan remake and hell, I think even Nintendo would be impressed if they saw them There's no way that can be a fluke.

OK - I know it's kinda silly, but it's really driving me crazy not being able to figure out what you're talking about here. Can you be a tad bit more descriptive? Thanks in advance.

Those pit thingies in Norfair that like to cheap-shot you with rocks.

@mowan: yes, I'm an artist by trade. thank you very much, your kind words give me a lot of confidence. I made pretty much all the Smileys on the left and I'm the graphic designer for the site... @opium, they're called polyps. Here's a cute chibi version from the M1 strategy guide:

So, a question not quite related to the hack:
The FCEUX emulator thing- I notice it can record movies.
The movies are in .fm2 format.
What program do I use to play those- or more preferably, could I possibly convert them into something like .avi or .wmv?

Instead of clicking 'Record Movie', click 'Avi/Wav' in the file menu, and pick 'Record Avi'. The Fm2 recording is just to let the emulator play back the game-play.

Is there a specific version of FCEUX you need to run the lua file? I have FCEUX2.0.0 and it refuses to run the file.

FCEUX 2.1.2 is recommended. Anything higher will work with it, but you may experience glitches.
