One of the primary themes of the Metroid series is loneliness. Samus is all alone on most of her missions. Beyond that, with what happened to her parents and her childhood being raised by birds, I doubt she really understands other humans.

That said, the picture with Ian led me to believe that he really liked her but she didn't understand. Then again, he only had one line of dialogue in the whole game. The whole thing seemed kind of juvenile to me.
