That's a good question. The background characters, especially him with his facial hair and ponytail in back, looked way more interesting than any of the main characters.

The android theory explains quite a bit about the story: Samus was on her way home when she got knocked out by some shady GFed members and gets imprisoned somewhere, forced to watch her whiny robot clone do the job for her, and replaced her with an imperfect android of Samus,(explaining things like the lack of shoulder fins on the power suit and the infamous High Heels on the Zero Suit, as well as her derailment as a character) uploading an AI based off the few records they had of her adventures and maybe her scan data A la ADAM from Fusion. Adam specifically programmed her to kiss up to him no matter how horrible his actions get, and planned out the whole ordeal in advance, which is why Samus seems unhealthily obsessed with him. He was the one who sent the android to the ship, manipulating it to do his bidding with blinding devotion, and programmed it to do things like freeze up at Ridley and do practically nothing in story just to piss off the real Samus being forced to watch her. After the true ending when the station blows up, the REAL Samus breaks out of prison, swoops in and brutally kills the shoddy knock-off robot, thus setting up the events for Fusion. But Adam(the true villain) already uploaded his memory early on, ready to cook up more Xanatos Gambits. Somehow that convoluted mumbo jumbo makes more sense than the actual story it seems.
