You've survived countless nights, replay after replay, the harshest of conditions. You've been seen on handheld and the TV. And, tonight, we lay you to rest, Metroid Fusion save battery, not even those encased in nintendonium can survive what you went through.
Good night sweet princess. 2002 - 2010. I will always remember the times you gave me. Your death awakes a nameless sorrow in my heart.
This happen to anybody else with their Fusion gamecard? D: I must've logged over 200 hours replaying this game. I could beat it with my eyes closed... Probably.

This happened to me when I played it on my Game Boy SP, but when I played it on my TV, it worked perfectly. But the Gamecube D-pad sucks anyway, and who wants to play a sidescroller with an analog stick? Life sucks.

I've had this question on my mind for years, so now seems like an appropriate time to ask. How many years/hours of playtime does it take for a GBA/cartridge save battery to die? I bought Metroid Fusion just three years ago and I've barely played it; only recently was my love for Metroid rekindled upon beating Fusion last Sunday.

My Super Metroid cartridge save battery was still good when I tried it a couple years ago. I guess it varies a lot.

On occasion when I start up Metroid Fusion once every half-year the save files are all gone, but it does have short term memory for when I'm doing a playthrough. I guess the battery is dying or mostly dead.
Same goes for Super Metroid.

Pokemon games have two data storages. A battery for the time and flash memory for saves. Both die out eventually, but this is only for GBA games.
Fusion if I recall correctly, uses flash memory which can corrupt after an EXTREMELY extended period of use, which is like a battery save dying.

I've noticed my Super Metroid cartridge going a bit funky on me last summer, when my cousin and I last played it... We finished Brinstar, saved, and the next day it was gone. Weird thing is, it worked fine after that.

I think save batteries usually last about 15-20 years, but it varies depending on usage and kind (no exact data on this unfortunately). Pokemon Red and Blue batteries die often, but the kind used in Crystal, Gold, and Platinum were terrible. I've got a couple copies of Metroid 2 with bad batteries; produces some interesting effects Of course, the data can also sometimes be corrupted. This is the first I've heard of a GBA game going under, so I guess getting 200 hours out of it is pretty good. There are ways of replacing them, but you need special tools and soldering iron.

Platinum was a DS game, don't you mean Silver? And yes, my Pokémon Red cartridge outlasted my Silver cartridge by far. I think the main reason for Crysal/Gold/Silver batteries dying is because it counts the time when the cartridge is not being used for the day/night cycle. Better off just buying a new cart.

...And that, my friends, is why you should use flash cards for everything. Easy to run homebrew off of, easy to put games on, easy to play media off of, and there are no batteries.

Ohhhhh!! So that's why ! Ah geez.. and I thought the battery lasted a life time. It will be a very sad day when my super metroid cartridge die . They should return to password then, , I hope memory card don't do this too... hey, what about my computer!? What? I will eventually die too !?

I remember one time my Metroid 2 cartridge corrupted and all of the colors were inverted on my GBA. Samus was a deep blue color, kind of like a SSB gravity suit, and all of the BG was red.

My Fusion cartridge is pretty methodical, considering it's (mostly) dead battery. I can start it up for no more than three times before my saves are deleted.

I actually got my hands on a security bit this past summer so my first order of business was replacing the dead battery in my Pokemon Blue game. I also had the battery go bad in my Pokemon Sapphire (logged about 200 hours on that guy so that's probably par for the course). Haven't had any batteries in a Metroid game die (yet) but I've taken apart MII:ROS, Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion carts, so if you're interested in replacing your batteries give me a holler in PM.
