I'm new to Metroid, I just got the NES version on a cartridge. Anything I should know?

Yes, that the first Metroid is password based, and thus you can do neato things without actually completing it the "right" way.
Um...yeah, I don't think anyone really likes me, will like me, or agrees with me, so I am just going to resolve the problem by leaving. Bye Metroid Database, I love the site and it alone.

Wait, they didn't add a save system to the Wii re-release?

Whoops, silly me.

I'm still curious about that matter, though, so I guess I'll go check it out.

Farming for energy is going to be a large part of the adventure.

There is an e-tank hidden on the ceiling in the first few rooms of Brinstar at the beginning (before the first vertical shaft). Save that until AFTER you defeat Ridley and Kraid, so you have full health at Mother Brain.

Brinstar has fake lava. Be aware of that. You can tell which lava is fake when you see enemies flying through it.
Same with the lower reaches of Norfair (the purple area with the seahorses).

Once you defeat one of the two mini-bosses, the game becomes a lot easier as your missile count increases dramatically. Also, each boss has an e-tank near the room hidden. For Kraid, it's in the same room as he's in, hidden below the door. For Ridley, it's a few rooms ahead.

Also, and most importantly, if you get lost, DON'T BE AFRAID TO USE A MAP. Metroid is a tough game for a beginner, and I don't feel bad saying that for my first several playthroughs, I used a map until I understood the layout of the game myself.

I suggest that you play the games either in chronological order, or in the order that they were released. And don't be afraid to play Metroid: Zero Mission if you get too frustrated with Metroid.

It might be better if he/she plays them by trilogies, in a sense.

I think it was Xcapist that broke it down like:

Metroid
M II
Super

Prime 1
Echoes
Corruption

Fusion
Other M
URUTIMATU DREDU

Hunters
Pinball
Yoshi Touch n' Go

Playing the games generally like that might be the way to go.

You need the Ice Beam if you want to reach Mother Brain. Without it, you can't defeat the Metroids that patrol the hallways preceding her lair, and believe me when I say that those things are balls-to-the-wall bitches to kill before they latch on to you.

Also: I hope you're really good at remembering directions, because there's no map in the original, and a lot of the rooms reuse graphics.

Jesus Christ man, you're in for a hard time. I really would have recommended Zero Mission, since it's not as balls-to-the-wall difficult as the original. Have fun dying again and again at Kraid (That bastard).

@Emperor Ing: The only problem is that Zero Mission misses your list and you include the random stuff like Hunters and Pinball which I was assuming to not be part of this. But, you may have a point. I would break it down differently though.

Original 2D Tetralogy are basically the most important games as they have a self-contained storyline that actually makes sense and gains depth with each entry. They are also the classic 2D series. (And I would play Zero Mission either instead of Metroid, right after playing Metroid, or at the end after beating Fusion.) After that, the Prime Trilogy is another fun self-contained arc that doesn't interfere with the main story really but is pretty fun. (I suggest literally the Metroid Prime Trilogy edition for the improved controls.) Then finally, there are random off-shoots like Hunters which branched off of Prime and Other M which wants to be part of the main Tetralogy, but messes up the storylines of every other game and has a style of gameplay vastly different than any other Metroid game.

Is that the Japanese name for Zero Mission? I'm confused. :-? My first thought was Dread, but that remains a glimmer in Sakamoto's eye.
