Anyone get legitemately creeped out by Echoes?

Postby beanDude » 04.05.11 3:55pm

Within the last couple of weeks, I finished Prime II Echoes for the first time. A general complaint I always heard about the game is the search for the Sky Temple keys at the end...
I didn't understand why they were complaining until I made it to this part. The clues were a little confusing and vauge, but at first I didn't realise they were all hidden by INVISIBLE floating enemies, the fist of which I discovered behind that wall you have to power-bomb in Agon because I'd exhausted nearly every other possibility.

Anyways, did anyone else find themselves getting creeped out during this one? The first game felt suspenseful most of the time, but there were a lot of things in this sequel that I just found plain scary.

The Ing, for instance, always made me feel nervous whenever no safe spots were nearby, and they'd go into puddle form and chase me around.
Or the purple acid pools in the dark world with their weird plant life.
Or the ingstorm particles that would ... well, those were creepy too.
Or the blue Phazon dust stuff and the creepy music that would show up whenever Dark Sammus was nearby.

There's a lot more things worth mentioning here, but that's why I got the idea to start such a thread... so here's my question:
What creeped you out while you were exploring Aether?

I was creeped out the moment I saw the GFED bodies dangling from the ceiling, and the atmosphere kept pace from there.

Echoes is an incredibly atmospheric game, and few Metroids, except maybe RoS can conjure up the dread you feel for most of your playthrough (until you get the light suit, where you become the alpha female asskicker of Aether).

Even after I got the light suit though, I was so used to avoiding Dark Aether's atmosphere that, for a while, I would habitually leapfrog around safe zones. :P

I loved Echoes. Best in the series in my opinion. I'm curious why people still prefer it over the original and flame it over the Dark world mechanic and the ammo. Without those it just isn't Echoes.

People flame the dark world and the ammo mechanics for two main reasons: 1) they misunderstood how those worked (e.g. they stood under bubbles for a long time waiting to recharge) and 2) it was different from Prime.

Echoes is, in my mind, the best of all the Primes as well. It retained the cohesive open-ended exploration of Prime but added more numerous and incredibly imaginative minibosses, made the environments far more unique and alien, and added important abilities that brought Samus closer to the character she was in the 2D games. It's also surprisingly grim for a Nintendo game (the scene with the soldiers hanging from the ceiling surprised me quite a bit as well). It's really unfairly bashed.

The first time I saw the Dark Troopers I was freakked out! I had never playyed game with zombies in it so these guyys scared the heckk out of me! Also the Warrior Ing would scare me with their screetching iI would alwayys run from one side of the room to the other tryying to find the exit! Even the last boss was creepyy! I think that the most hideous boss of the four prime games!

One of the very reasons why I believe Echoes is the best prime game.

Dark Aether really, is the video game equivlant to hell.
The natives hurt and kill you, the water hurts and kills you, the fucking AIR hurts and kills you! NOTHING that is naturally from dark Aether is benificial to survival. NOTHING. There is even Phazon there to top it all off! :dark:

The music on dark Aether is incredibly unsettling. I dare you to listen to the Ing Hive theme alone and in the darkness one night. It gave me a few chills.

Aaaaah
Dark Aether, why do I love you so?
with your poisonous air, water and land?

maybe because I'm a slight video game masochist (and by extension, so is Samus)

didn't mind the "Flee from bubble to bubble and watch your ammo count" mechanics, they were as bountiful as missiles in every other metroid game

Surprisingly, Corruption creeped me out more than the other Prime games, namely the Metroid containment area on Skytown (seeing them in their containers knowing those fuckers would be coming for me soon!), and the Valhalla. On my first playthrough I forced myself to return there each time I got an energy cell, so that was a lot of trips there. The eerie music, environment, and creatures there had me on edge quite a bit.

I suppose Dark Aether was unsettling, but you are there for such a large portion of the game that the effect wears off after a while. Echoes may not be my favorite in the series, but it was still fantastic... It had a challenge and complexity above the others, had the coolest morphball puzzles, the most interesting lore, and the Sanctuary Fortress remains my favorite of any environment in the series.

I don't know if Echoes or Prime is my favorite of the Prime Trilogy. I like the pacing of the latter, but the former has an atmosphere of the highest quality. Dark Aether is one of the main factors for that, and yes, Echoes certainly creeps me out a bit. I have only beaten Echoes once, and just started a new playthrough a few days ago. I am loving this game as much as would love replaying Prime, and even told my mom to take a look at the screen a few times. I wanted her to see just how heavy the atmosphere is for the game. To this day, I think the first room where the Marines are hanging is my favorite room in the entire Prime Trilogy. It sets the stage for a creepy game very early. :ice:

Every time I play Echoes (from intro screen to mission) I get the chills.
I can't deny that "feeling" every time I play it. It never goes away.

Yes, Echoes was very creepy. The dead marines, the dark world, the Ing. That makes it one of the best in the series, despite the insanely overpowered Spider Guardian.

The creepiness wears off about after an hour and turns more into 'I don't want to be here.'

Never got that feeling. The only annoying thing was the parts where those oh-so-indestructible ingworms cut off certain paths, but other than that, each visit was a tense tour through a hellscape that mostly turned out to be a lot of fun, thanks to the tougher enemies (aside from the insanely over-powered Hunter Ing*).

*I swear, to this day I don't know a good strategy for them, aside from the Annihilator Beam, but you only get that at the end anyway!
