That doesn't make any sense. My post was in response to you saying that sales don't affect the games Nintendo puts out, and F-Zero is a good example. Now you're saying

Furthermore, what incentive does Nintendo have to continue a franchise they find lacking in revenue?

Which is the point I was making in the first place. :/

Other than that, a well written and thought out post.

I gave my copy to my mother so she could trade it in for Wii Fit Plus ...

Jesus, the game wasn't that bad.

Hopefuly, the rumor (if it happened to be true) only means that instead of releasing at least five metroids per generation, we will get only one or two across the 3ds and stream gen.

Other M bombing is a bittersweet pill to swallow.

On one hand, Other M was NOT the Metroid game I wanted, nor was it the portrayal of Samus I admired. Even the gameplay, as action-packed as it was, was ridiculously simplified, stripped of the soul and thrill of exploration and self-improvement that permeates the other games. Other M failing, one would hope, would send a message to Nintendo about what type of game fans and consumers DO want, with the award-winning formula that has inspired countless other games and defined an entire franchise and genre. And hopefully it'll make them think long and hard about what to do for the next game, hopefully to go the "Donkey Kong Returns" route and really dazzle the core and mainstream fans just as Super and Prime did once before.

On the other hand, as was mentioned before, Nintendo has a habit of just outright dropping support for a franchise after one poor reception. Once thriving franchises such as F-Zero, Earthbound, and Star Fox are in limbo, with only ports and re-releases on the horizon. In many cases, entire console generations or 10 year gaps pass before a new installment arises and the series returns with its prior luster. While I don't doubt a break would do Metroid good, as a Metroid fan I'd like more games, with the quality of their predecessors, rather than waiting a decade for the next "true" Metroid experience.

What I'd like to see in a sequel is a game that has the same gameplay style as other m, but takes place on a planet, you are not doing anything for the federation (just working on your own for a bounty), has more about the chozo than samus, and takes place right after fusion. This would be an ideal metroid game.

I hope you're not too hopeful about seeing a sequel to Other M. It was pretty much a total bomb, and I predict that nintendo will pretend it didn't happen and go in a completely new direction.

I didn't know total bombs sell close to a million units.

Why do people keep saying Other M won't have a sequel? The sequel already came out 9 years ago! :/

If those million people are like me, then they bought it because it was a metroid game, then they tossed it out like garbage. If they make a sequel, the metroid name alone won't make me buy it at all.

A sale is a sale, regardless of the reason.

That's why nintendo can release any shit with Mario on the name (God forbid that name is Mario Party...) because they know Mario sells.

Considering how fan reception is mixed (you can't even say "Older fans hate it; newer fans love it" though there are some general inklings of that) all you can do is look at the sales numbers and say "Well it didn't do bad"

The smart thing to do would be for the Nintendo people to say "well how can we make the next one sell MORE?" and THAT'S when you start looking at the general complaints people had with the game.

I may dislike Other M, but I'm trying to be "realistic*" here.

It wasn't that bad in sales. $50*400,000=$20,000,000. While they may not have made as much money as they might have wanted to, it still was quite a bit of money.

I was under the impression that Other M sold close to 850,000 units.

However, you have to take into account how many of those units were sold for like, $20 or $15.

The numbers I've found show M:OM selling around ~840,000 total copies to date, which isn't bad, yet even assuming they all sold at full price that's only ~$42,000,000, about half of the average AAA game budget, making it highly unlikely, especially when you factor in more realistic discounted unit sales, that Nintendo made back their initial investment. So financially, particularly compared to the Prime series, M:OM did in fact bomb. For this very reason, Nintendo's next Metroid title will most likely be for the 3DS, considering it's far cheaper to develop for, and we all know that system needs all the good games it can get.

For comparison, estimated total sales worldwide to date:

    Metroid Prime (GC): 2,829,717 units

Metroid Prime 2 (GC): 1,289,871 units

Metroid Prime 3 (Wii): 1,595,122 units

Metroid Prime Trilogy (Wii): 623,449 units

Metroid: Other M (Wii): 839,911 units
The last metroid is in captivity. All's well in the galaxy.

I'm pretty sure a AAA HD game costs that much to make. Not a AAA Wii game, even with marketing. Best case scenario is that Other M broke even, which given the localization and voice acting, it probably did.
