I always figured they were aiming for a sex scene or simple nude scene. Probably something mundane, like the cliched "naked woman in the shower scene" that is often seen in science-fiction movies. And by going to the extreme from the start, they were able to settle on much less extreme, but still irksome and questionable, apparel and design choices. A standard bargaining technique.
