I think the reason that Metroid isn't liked, or perhaps, appreciated, as much as the more successful franchises such as Mario, Pokemon and Zelda, is because there may not be that much appeal behind it as a series. Metroid is unique in that it's a stark contrast to the usual games that Nintendo consistently put out. Unlike the light-hearted and whimsical fantasy settings of Mario and Zelda, Metroid doesn't conform to that setting and instead takes more a dark, primarily sci-fi-orientated atmosphere. Maybe it's different nowadays, but perhaps a lot of Nintendo fans preferred to play the light-hearted Mario/Zelda-type games than the eerie, movie-like Metroid games.

Or it could be the difficulty and the set-up of the game. Now, I've actually never played a Zelda game, aside from one time when I went round my friend's house watching him play on Ocarina of Time (I didn't want to play it, for some reason) and he was stuck at one point, and I briefly tried to help him out, to no avail. So I may be just pulling this out of my ass now, but perhaps the fact that Metroid is set-up, not only non-linearly, but focuses on the acquisition of items to progress in the game, as well as speed-running for the best endings.

Or it could be the fact that Metroid just doesn't have as many games in its series compared to Mario, Zelda and Pokemon. Mario always has games coming out that are consistently brilliant, are on every console and a considerable number of them are launch titles for consoles. Mario games are the ones people most look forward to. Plus, it has spin-offs like the Mario Kart series, Mario Party series...a whole array of spin-offs spanning a multitude of genres from RPGs to multiplayer racing games.

Zelda's similar. Although the first two games are the ones that people don't particularly tend to like and the ones that don't date well, once again it always has consistently brilliant games coming out, on every console and a considerable number of them being launch titles. Plus, it's one of those games that have long life spans because they take long to complete and whatnot.

Metroid is somewhat more limited. Like Zelda, the first two games aren't the ones that people highlight as being good nowadays. Furthermore, it just doesn't have as many games as Mario, Zelda or Pokemon. While Mario had a bunch of games on the Game Boy and Zelda had a game and a subsequent updated version which were both considered classics, Metroid only had its sequel to the original, Metroid II, which wasn't that well-recieved. It also missed out on the N64, and Mario and Zelda both had games that fans consider to be the best in their respective franchises.

Even with all this, Metroid should be more appreciated. It's got brilliantly atmospheric music, tense and spooky settings, ingenious set-up, etc.

Actually, I think Ridley11 is right. There are alot of hardcore gamers where I am, all of them know about Metroid, but don't know much about the actual series. So it's known among gamers, but not many try it out strictly because it's a Nintendo game. So yeah, it's the probably the fact that it's a Nintendo IP that no gamers play it. Another reason: There's too much time in-between game releases, and in the age of CoD where games get new releases every 1 or 2 years that's too much time to wait for a widely unknown IP.

Well, that, and if you inundate a market with a particular series (see: Madden, CoD, Battlefield, etc) you are guaranteed to gain a fanbase, no matter what the quality. It's the same case with the Mario games: they are pushed out in front, in your face, so he's always present (a pleasant thought...).

Metroid, on the other hand, has fewer games to its name. While all of those games are polished to a degree of perfection that other Nintendo series usually lack, it is far removed from the consciousness of the average gamer, and really only sought after by the hardcore fanbase of the particular series.

I would also like to congratulate SA-X on a very good first post. I'm late, but hey why not.

People dislike Metroid because Samus is in chains by Sakamoto in people's opinions. They say she must be turned over to Retro or Miyamoto, but the latter would probably milk her series and start to take elements in the Fusion sequel if it finlly gets fucking made from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic instead of Alien. No thank you.

No they don't, the average gamer doesn't know or care who Sakamoto or Miyamoto are, neither do they know that Retro Studios made the Prime Trilogy.

Those who already are Metroid fans know and/or care about the two at this point. What you said would pretty strictly apply to Other M haters, RoyBoyX.

I think that was the joke. Especially when after Jay remarked, "Everyone knows the Wii is for children and girls", to which Neil added, "And gays."

But that's just my off-topic 2 cents.

Although I think Nintendo's "kiddy" image wasn't as bad as it is now. I know many people, currently avid Xbox 360 games who play COD, etc., that have nostalgic memories of playing on the Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, N64 and the like. But when you mention the Wii to them, they will instantly say, "The Wii's shit." Likely because of how much the Wii seems to cater towards the casual market, and those embarrassingly cheesy Wii adverts.

Nice use of the report button bro.

Anyways, I think no one notices Metroid cause well....they don't know what they are missing. They'd rather smoke pot and play Halo. Halo sucks. I'd rather play a sucky Metroid game then Halo.

Anyways, If they noticed Metroid more, which it is in the process of being noticed...I hope, I would be a full time Metroid fan. Which means, well.....I'd be a bigger fan, cause right now....Metroid ain't doin so well....from my eye at least.

I know you can't delete posts, and I wasn't trying to be a dick. I tend to type the way I talk which can come off as being a dick in text form, due to the fact that you can't add inflections or emotions. For future reference when you double post if you have the option to go back and edit like you can here, just edit it to say something like: "this was a double post before, please disregard this post."

Alright, you guys...

Those guys in The world needs Metroid 5 or whatever forum it was are saying no more Metroids or Samus. They are driving you through the story of her life, giving you a MUCH BETTER game series than fucking saving Peach over and over again every day, and collecting all 120 Triforce pieces then saving Zelda. Why has nobody gotten tired of doing that yet? They preserve the reusing of an element over and over by making Ridley present everywhere Samus turns.

Actually, most of the people on this topic are part of the Metroid 5 topic. Samus stays, Metroids and Ridley take a good long vacation, and the story lives happily ever after.

At least that's what I think should happen. Not the Metroid 5 topic though, is it?
