Team Ninja: "Metroid Other M's Story was All Sakamoto"

Postby Warhead » 09.23.11 6:09am

http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/7 ... -gaiden-3/

There was an interview by G4 to Team Ninja regarding Ninja Gaiden 3, and they asked a question regarding Metroid: Other M and its controversial story. They produced this interesting quote:

G4: Going back to Ninja Gaiden 3 – Team Ninja’s last action game, Metroid: Other M, was also quite story-heavy. The story elements, however, received something of a mixed reaction among players and critics. Have you learned anything from your experience with that title, and how will you use it to improve the story presentation in NG3?

Hayashi: The story for Other M was definitely the product of Mr. Sakamoto at Nintendo. We definitely worked with them on the project, but that was all him. For NG3, we’ve worked with Masato Kato to create our own story. It’s going to be different in a lot of ways. There are definitely things we learned from Other M by working with Mr. Sakamoto and with Nintendo that we’ve applied to the NG development. The actual story that you will experience here, however, will have a very different feel. A “Team Ninja” feel, you might say.

It feels almost as if they're saying that they were embarrassed by Sakamoto's story(and this is Team Ninja we're talking about, beyond Metroid they've never been known for their stories), and now they got an actual talented writer in Masato Kato(writer of the original NG trilogy, but better known in my eyes for Chrono Trigger), it's as if they're reassuring us that it won't be like OM.

Im not finding anywhere in that quote a part where they feel ashamed honestly. Many people still blame them for the story of Other M, they practicaly have to clarify that they had nothing to do with that whenever they can.

Oh man, I thought it had been made clear on several occasions that Team Ninja had little if any input whatsoever with OM's story.

Can't help but wonder what exactly they have "learned" from Sakamoto and Nintendo... Well he said "apply" instead of take caution or anything along those lines so...

They made it very clear, but there is people out there that don't do a lot of research (the journalist that made this interview may qualify as one). So if someone asks them, it won't kill them to explain it again.

It might kill them if you respond with insults. :P
But fair enough. Can't help but feel sorry for Team Ninja for being blamed for something they didn't do.

G4? Bah! >:(

I couldn't care less about them. After their abismal review of Other M, I find it difficult to take them seriously.

As for the interview, I don't know if they're saying they're ashamed of Other M's story. I think they're just stating Ninja Gaiden 3 will be different because it's being made internally.

Exactly. We all knew that since the beginning. Why do they bother asking?

Well, I understand that. But considering they're a company who has this image of "gaming", it'd be nice if they did their own research (not just on account of this, but the Other M review as well) to avoid situations like this. Instead, it just becomes another sign of G4's ignorance.

Nobody could take them seriously in the first place. And this interview is not really halping.

To G4's credit, they did a rather fantastic round-table discussion about Other M and their controversial review in which they articulated their points far more rationally and clearly while debating what the game did well and whether other critics and journalists on the team agreed or disagreed with.

And, again, to G4's credit, Sakamoto was definitely the writer, but most people don't know that, and even the game lists more than one co-director that could have been involved in the story process, or at least how the story was presented and directed.

Yeah, wow, big surprise. Haven't we known this for quite a while now? >_>

And G4 deserves absolutely no credit whatsoever. The only person on that channel I respect slightly is Adam Sessler, but even then it's just kind of an love/hate thing.
